Basic Function

The incumbent conducts comprehensive geophysical studies and analyses related to hydrocarbon exploration and prepare appropriate reports. Must be capable of working alone or with a group to develop timely and reliable solutions to geophysical problems and to implement these solutions or recommend appropriate action, depending on the circumstances. Must have substantial expertise in one or more of the geophysical disciplines used in hydrocarbon exploration.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The incumbent is expected to perform one or more of the following activities, the number and combination depending on the assignment
  • Carry out investigations into basic geophysical problems related to hydrocarbon exploration.
    Develop, recommend and implement strategies to optimize the quality and utilization of geophysical data
  • Develop and maintain computerized geophysical databases, and provide support for Exploration users
  • Develop and evaluate geophysical computer applications and apply them to solving Exploration problems
  • Train new personnel
  • Perform any or all of the duties described in the Geophysicist job description or as assigned

Position responsibilities:

  • Develop algorithms for seismic data processing using signal processing, wave propagation, numerical mathematics and optimization principles
  • Work closely in collaboration with processing staff for the tests of algorithms
  • Work closely with software department for the deployment on CPU and GPU clusters
  • Present your work and results at internal meeting, external conferences and workshops, and also need to prepare papers for journal publications

Education and Experience

  • PhD or Master degree in Geophysics, Theoretical Physics, Electronics, Mechanics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or other related scientific or engineering disciplines preferred
  • Minimum of 5-10 year experience in Petroleum Geophysics or other research discipline appropriate to the task
  • Strong analytical skills in mathematics and problem-solving
  • Understanding basic concepts of seismic data processing and model building workflows
  • Understanding the concepts of theory of exploration seismology and anisotropy
  • Have experience of wave equation-based data simulation and imaging is must; experience of full waveform inversion is preferred; experience with elastic wave simulation is strongly preferred
  • Proficient in C/C++ programming; programming in Python/Shell or other scripting languages is preferred
  • Proficient in parallel programming on computer clusters using MPI and OpenMP or other multi-threading programming; ability in GPU programming is preferred
  • Strong experience with programming in UNIX environment
  • Collaborative team player
  • Strong communication, material organization, and presentation skills
