Alaska Overview

ConocoPhillips is Alaska’s largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, with approximately 1.2 million net undeveloped acres at year-end 2022. The company produced an average of 200 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2022. ConocoPhillips has major ownership interests in two of North America’s largest oil fields, both located on Alaska’s North Slope—Kuparuk, which the company operates, and Prudhoe Bay. Additionally, ConocoPhillips operates the Alpine Field located on the Western North Slope. The company has an ownership interest in the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) and owns/operates the Polar Tankers fleet.

Position Summary

The ConocoPhillips Alaska, Inc. (COPA) HSE Specialist is responsible for delivery of health and safety services to Alaska Business Unit with an objective to provide a safe working environment through effective risk management, comply with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, follow COPA Life Saving Rules minimum requirements, and meet COPA HSE requirements applicable to the facilities. This role is an entry level position in the HSE function.

This is a Safety Sensitive position.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Lead by example in our Incident-Free Culture
  • Maintain a high level of visibility, day-to-day, to enhance rapport with operations and maintenance personnel and assure execution of core work practices pertaining to ConocoPhillips’ Life Saving Rules, influencing as necessary to improve performance
  • Engage and influence contractors to continuously improve HSE performance
  • Serve as the facility subject matter expert on Alaska Safety Handbook and COPA HSE requirements
  • Participate in facility safety permitting activities when required.
  • Provide independent review of tasks including but not limited to:
  • confined space entries
  • hot tap packages
  • hot work on in-service equipment
  • excavation / trenching activities
  • critical lift plans
  • other applicable tasks as required
  • Participate in and provide health and safety input during facility planning activities
  • Support completion of industrial hygiene and safety monitoring to comply with COPA and regulatory requirements and safeguard employees
  • Lead or assist with incident investigations (e.g., TapRooT® or latent cause analysis) at assigned facilities and participate in other investigations as requested by facility or HSE leadership
  • Provide or coordinate hazard-specific training for personnel, as necessary
  • Serve as Site Safety or Safety Officer within the Incident Management Team (IMT) as needed
  • Participate in and support HSE leading indicator programs
  • Provide support to emergency response teams, environmental, industrial hygiene, and medical staff as required
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Basic/Required:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or national, or an alien admitted as a permanent resident, refugee or asylee
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene / Public Health, Engineering, Physical / Biological Science, or related HSE field or foreign equivalent
  • Current/valid driver’s license
  • Willing and able as needed (25-50%) (with or without reasonable accommodation) to work in a remote work location on a 2 weeks on/2 weeks off work schedule

Preferred:

  • ConocoPhillips HSE internship
  • Master's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene / Public Health, engineering, physical / biological science, or related HSE field
  • Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST) and/or Associate Safety
  • Professional (ASP) certification(s) with career aspirations to obtain Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and / or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certifications
  • Mechanically inclined to work with various equipment and troubleshoot, e.g., direct reading equipment
  • Knowledge of health standards and regulations, monitoring strategy and methodology, and toxicological effects
  • Takes ownership of actions and follows through on commitments.
