Title: Head Librarian

Hours: Monday – Friday (Hourly 20 or 40 Hours Required).

Vacation Accrual: 1 Week – The 1st Year; 2 Weeks – After the Third Year

Expectations for this Position:

The Head Librarian is the senior manager who generally reports directly to the Dean of Academic Affairs and has responsibility for all aspects of library operations, including: planning, technology, budgeting, hiring and supervision of library/Writing Center staff and student workers, strategic planning with respect to the future growth and development of the library, and initiating and monitoring library programs and services. This person ensures that the Library's collection and resources are sufficient to meet the primary goal of supporting the teaching and research needs of the Academic department, faculty, staff and students, and ensures that the Library is in compliance with ABHE accreditation standards, and supports the Library's relations and partnerships with outside colleges, library consortia, and professional organizations. This person may also have certain teaching, college service, scholarship, and/or other administrative responsibilities. This person will ensure the library is an appropriate environment to succeed in its purpose and goals for the community.

The Head Librarian helps to monitor resource need and effectiveness, library support and availability and student research capability, in conjunction with faculty and the VPAA. The Head Librarian strategically moves to develop quality assurance and quality improvement strategies. The Head Librarian must contribute to managing communications, assessments and reports as necessary as part of our accreditation and student satisfaction efforts. The Head Librarian manages and implements appropriate student worker evaluations for both the Library and Writing Center, professional development, and related academic processes and opportunities for students, as well as for the community. He/she will oversee the administrative processes related to library hires, contracts, will keep records, and related communications. The Head Librarian serves as a member of either the Provost’s or the President’s cabinet (as needed) and participates in strategic planning of the College and in environmental scanning and assessment of opportunities and threats. This person negotiates options, solutions and resolutions to facilitate healthy communication and planning with students, staff, faculty, alumni, churches, pastors, districts, and related stakeholders. Guided by the Chief Financial Officer and VPAA, the Head Librarian will prepare and develop budgets for all library needs and improvements. He or she will also complete any other project or responsibility as designated by the VPAA and/or President. The Head Librarian may also teach any associated courses at the college, at will.

Qualified Head Librarian Candidates will Demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of a foreign language for communities with non-English speaking populations
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form
  • Ability to make administrative decisions, interpret policies, and supervise staff and student workers
  • Ability to motivate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, volunteers, other community agencies and the public
  • Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service
  • Ability to organize job duties and work independently: Prioritizes and plans work activities; Uses time efficiently; Plans for additional resources; Sets goals and objectives; Organizes or schedules other people and their tasks; Develops completes realistic action plans.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library materials and resources
  • Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing—Spanish and English preferred.

Education/Experience:

Masters in Library Science degree or enrollment in program is required. 3-5 years of sufficient library job experience is needed to warrant consideration for this position.
