NOTICE OF VACANCY


POSITION
: HEAD START INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT (Floater)


LOCATION
: As assigned by the Program Coordinator or Grant Manager


JOB SUMMARY
: The Head Start Instructional Assistant (Floater) will provide services to help

achieve a well-organized, smoothly functioning class and school environment in which students

can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.


REPORTS TO
: Head Start Instructor, Program Coordinator, and Grant Manager


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE
: At the time of application, the candidate

must have/be:

  • Associates Arts Degree, Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or willingness to persue the CDA if hired.
  • Some experience working with children of preschool age preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
At the time of application, the candidate must have/be:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Assist the teacher in planning and implementing activities with four- and fiveyear old children consistent with the curriculum guide, resources and training provided.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, working relationships with children, parents, staff, and program partners.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to any and all Calvert County Public Schools’ Head Start sites.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Demonstrates success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  • Work involves assisting the teacher in a Head Start preschool setting, which provides a comprehensive program to meet educational, emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs of children.
  • Provide coverage and assistance, as needed, in Head Start classrooms and the office location.
  • Work with the teacher to facilitate activities for all children both indoors and outdoors.
  • Assists the teacher in planning and maintaining a safe, clean, learning environment and in assuring the well being and safety of the children in his/her care.
  • Follows the Head Start Program Performance Standards and all CCPS policies and procedures.
  • Exhibits a genuine nurturing, caring attitude to all children.
  • Maintains a cooperative attitude of working together with the teacher, volunteers, parents, and program specialists in planning and implementing activities.
  • Assists teacher to implement the developmental assessment for each child to determine the child’s strengths and areas in which each child may need help.
  • Plans with and assists the teacher in preparing materials and supplies in advance for activities.
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining confidential child classroom folders, by collecting monthly samples of children’s work.
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining a confidential assessment binder, consisting of developmental assessments, individual goals, and observations of progress toward meeting goals.
  • Shares in the development and implementation of written lesson plans with the teacher.
  • Assists teacher in implementing behavior plans designed by resource teachers and/or mental health specialists.
  • Assists the teacher in maintaining discipline and supervision of children during all Head Start activities.
  • Observes children to detect signs of illness, injury, emotional disturbance, learning disorder, speech problem, or other special needs, and immediately reports observations to the teacher for follow up.
  • Sits with children during all meal times and eats the same meals as the children to provide a model for good nutritional habits (unless modified meals are prescribed by a physician’s statement).
  • Accompanies teacher on visits to each child’s home twice per year as indicated on the planning calendar, to meet parents or guardians and become familiar with the child’s family and home environment.
  • Works cooperatively with the teacher and the classroom family advocate as a team, to encourage the active participation of all parents in the program.
  • Assists the teacher in entering accurate attendance records.
  • Attends all training opportunities as provided by CCPS and all staff meetings called by the Head Start Coordinator.
  • Attends training opportunities provided by other agencies as recommended by CCPS or Head Start Coordinator.
  • Performs any other task deemed necessary by the Head Start Instructor and/or Head Start Coordinator.
  • Thinks, concentrates, and positively interacts with others.
  • Comes to work promptly every day.
  • Works flexible hours as necessary.
  • Works under stress and meets all deadlines.


OTHER DUTIES
: (Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might

reasonably be assigned.) Performs related work as required or assigned by the Head Start

Instructor, Program Coordinator, and Grant Manager.


LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION
: Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) or willingness to

persue the CDA if hired.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
: AA Degree or willingness to get a CDA


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking, and is

performed in a typical school environment.


UNUSUAL DEMANDS
: May be subject to a flexible work schedule, including working with

families on an emergency basis.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Eleven (11) month position; 214 days/yr.; $18.28 per hour;

employment is contingent upon continued grant funding and need.


FLSA STATUS
: Non-exempt.

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate

supervisor.


State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school

children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law

requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in

person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of

a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these

requirements.
