Heavy EO - Landfill
The incumbent under the guidance of the Landfill Manager operates some landfill heavy equipment to maintain the city’s landfill according to Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality and Federal Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.
1. Maintain and operate Landfill heavy equipment assigned in a safe manner.
2. Maintain landfill according to State and Federal regulations.
3. Acquire and hold Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality required license.
4. Frequent contact with the public and city employees by phone or in person and provide operating information.
5. Do random inspections of incoming loads for tires and hazardous wastes.
6. Able to operate compost area and convenience center and communicate with the public.
7. Perform weed and grass control and pick up litter around the landfill.
8. Assist in the cleaning of heavy equipment.
9. This position is required to work assigned holidays and weekends.
10. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EO In Training Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license is required.
- Must have or be able to obtain and hold a Solid Waste License within one year of employment.
EOI Education and Experience
- Same as above and must have Apprentice landfill license (level A).
EOII Education and Experience
- Same as above and must have Journeyman landfill license (level B).
EOIII Education and Experience
- Same as above and must have Masters landfill license (level C).
Preferred Qualifications: experience with operating heavy equipment or construction equipment.
OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES:
The incumbent shall possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department. Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position. Good communication and interpersonal skills are also required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must sit and operate equipment for extended periods of time and frequently stand, walk, climb, talk and hear. Must use hands to operate equipment, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required. Being able to see in minimal light is also required. The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is required to work in a small area that can be congested with heavy construction equipment, large trash trucks and small public vehicles.
The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
