JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Histotechnologist/Histotechnician
REPORTS TO: The Director of Pathology and the Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, and cutting, mounting and staining procedures. Tissue specimens received are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the standards required.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
· EDUCATION: Bachelor Degree, Associate Degree or Technical Vocational Certifificate
· CERTIFICATION: ASCP Registry
· EXPIERENCE: Prior laboratory experience required
· SKILLS: Basic computer knowledge. Demonstrates organization, self-motivation, good communication, interpersonal skills and team player.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work in a fast paced environment based on laboratory and office procedures. Exposure to potentially harmful materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORTS:
Deals with stressors associated with laboratory, technical work environment, patient care, urgent situations, etc. Prolonged sitting.
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST/HISTOTECHNICIAN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Sorts specimens according
2. Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin, embedding, cutting tissue sections, and staining of slides
3. Prepares solutions, stains, and reagents in accordance with standard written procedures
4. Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness, cleanliness, and sharpens and hone microtome knives
5. Records number of tissue blocks verifying proper identification and label
6. Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used, and places orders for replacements as required
7. Assists the Pathologist in gross examination
8. Capable of performing all routine histology and cytology procedures
