Summary

Counselors will provide intervention and short-term assistance for students in need. They will deliver a range of preventive, developmental, remedial, and therapeutic counseling and psychological services that integrate the developmental and learning needs of students and support their educational success. Counselors will also serve as a point of response and resource for emergency situations.

Description of Duties

  • Provide short-term psychological counseling interventions, and where appropriate, referral for problems and personal concerns which impact a student’s educational experience and interfere with academic success and personal development. These may include feelings of anxiety, depression, or loneliness; difficulties in family or other relationships; dealing with loss and grief, issues of physical or substance abuse; stress or time management; and motivation.
  • Staff the crisis hotline/Center where emergency situations can be reported and addressed rapidly. Collectively determine a follow-up response that will be facilitated by a Counselor.
  • Work as part of the Behavioral Review Team as needed to define protocols and actions in situations where appropriate intervention is not clearly apparent.
  • Work with the faculty and staff to provide training and share best practices for dealing with mental health and behavior issues in the classroom and broader educational environment.
  • Assist in the planning, development and implementation of programs designed to enhance student success and retention.
  • Assist individual students, groups, and special populations with educational planning and adjustment to college by providing developmental counseling, guidance, and intervention as appropriate to best support successful academic progress from the point of admission to graduation
  • Provide career counseling assessment, information and resources to help students develop awareness of their personal occupational interests and abilities, learn about the career opportunities available to them, and integrate their academic planning with clearer lifelong career goals.
  • Provide information, resources, services, advocacy, and interventions to help students reach their academic, personal and career development goals
  • Help develop and deliver programs and that are developmental, preventive, and proactively support students’ academic, career, transfer and personal development and educational success.
  • Maintain awareness of trends in higher education and professional best practices to enhance personal counseling skills.
  • Participate in an ongoing process of assessment at the institutional, program, and department level to improve student learning and success.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling or closely related field required.
  • Possess current, valid national certification (e.g., Nationally Certified Counselor [NCC]) or New Jersey state license to perform counseling services (e.g., LAC) at the time of hire.
  • Possess or commit to earn licensure (e.g., Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor [LPC], Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor[LMFT], Licensed Clinical Social Worker [LCSW]) to perform counseling services in the state of New Jersey by the end of the third academic year of employment.* Must demonstrate annual progress toward licensure.

Experience:

  • Experience in mental health evaluations and assessment, preferably in a higher education setting.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Computer literacy skills at an intermediate level with the demonstrated ability to utilize and apply Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point as well as specialized software programs and computer applications essential to the learning process. e.g. the College’s Learning Management System and ERP.
  • Knowledge of information research strategies.
  • Ability to travel locally as needed.
  • Must be able to work in-person at the Lincroft Campus. This is not a remote position.

Preferred Qualifications & Special Considerations

Knowledge of Monmouth County and its communities.

*Possession of current, valid New Jersey state licensure to perform counseling services and maintenance of said licensure are conditions of continued employment.

Pay: $46.50 per hour
