Program Summary
As the HVAC Instructor you will teach Hands-on training where it has traditionally included, understanding the basic fundamentals of HVAC installation, Introduction to EPA Type I & Type II CORE testing & HVAC Safety, and Practical application of brazing. The HVAC Course is part of Goodwill of Silicon Valley’s CTE Program.
Goodwill Silicon Valley Career Technical Education Program (CTE) provides clients with a pathway towards securing long term employment and developing personal, professional growth by hosting no-cost, entry-level skills training across a variety of trade-specific fields. The training programs are designed to provide a safe, professional, and productive learning environment for all students.
This is a part time position with flexible scheduling. The course is Monday - Friday, 20 hours per week, lasting 8 weeks. Ideal candidates will be available to host 3 cohorts over the year.
Major Responsibilities:
- Instructs, guides, and assesses trainees to become successful in pursuing a career in HVAC
- Develops and presents lessons with performance objectives/competencies that are in alignment with industry standards and understood by the students
- Develops and revises course outlines, modules, teaching methods and curriculum to remain current with industry needs and current technology, under the direction of the CTE & Employer Engagement Manager.
- Demonstrate safe industry techniques and tool operation to lead hands on-training
- Demonstrates and promotes punctuality
- Upholds and enforces student policies, and addresses violations of policies with case managers
- Uses a variety of instructional techniques and materials which are appropriate to the course and to improve adult students skills to support in finding a job
- Maintains current and accurate records of student’s attendance and progress
- Works in cooperation with other members of the team to ensure a successful training program.
- Evaluates persons referred for program and makes recommendations based on their aptitudes, interests, and abilities.
- Keeps up to date in subject area and continually works for the improvement of instructional techniques
- Treats students with courtesy and respect
- Shares ideas, techniques, and materials as appropriate with other staff members. Updates curriculum as needed
- Demonstrates willingness to offer and receive suggestions
- Maintains inventory and responsible for care of equipment and materials
- Keeps informed of social, political and economic developments in the community. Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity of the socio-economic and ethnic make-up of Goodwill clientele
- Maintains proper control and preserves a suitable learning environment
- Performs other duties as requested.
Job Specifications:
Education Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years related occupational work experience
EPA Universally certified (Section 608)
Academic degrees are a plus but not required
Knowledge required:
Comprehensive understanding of HVAC safety procedures, including Installation and Technician Maintenance
Proficient in the English language
Teaching and/or work experience in relevant training programs such as: HVAC Installation or Technician
Equipment used:
Computer, projector, printer, and copy machine
HVAC Brazing equipment
HVAC Installation and Technical repair equipment
Aptitudes/skills/temperament:
- To possess good oral and written communication skills, good observation skills and mature judgment.
- Ability to interface with all populations and demonstrates sensitivity to socio-economic and ethnic make-up of the program.
- Demonstrates willingness to offer and receive suggestions
- Ability to maintain order of the classroom.
- Desire to work with people of diverse socio-economic backgrounds
Physical demands
The job involves frequently standing in front of a class and sitting for an extended period.
This position may require lifting objects up to 40 lbs.
Job setting
Location: Goodwill of Silicon Valley's headquarters in San Jose. There is regular contact with the public, business, and community agencies. The position requires minimal supervision.
