As part of our Water-Wise Program, you help teach swim lessons to individuals and groups modified and adapted for swimmers of varying abilities as part of a larger Inclusion department that focuses on each swimmers unique skillset at our flagship YMCAs in Beverly and/or Ipswich. The YMCA developed “Water Wise,” a water safety program for children with special needs to ensure all swimmers have an opportunity to learn. Through this program, Swim Instructors support families through an intake process, customized support, and provide parent education and staff training. On a regular day you will implement inclusion curriculum following YUSA standards during swim lessons for children and adults, engage member and visitors to improve upon their experience, assess swimmers capabilities, progress swimmers through individualized lessons, creating a positive and inclusive environment.


To thrive in this role you have exceptional people skills, the ability to empathetically connect with others, and the ability to implement Individual Activity Plans to progress a swimmer based on needs. A successful candidate will be compassionate, have experience and interest in working with individuals with diverse abilities in group or 1:1 settings. You may have experience in Special Education, Occupational Therapy, ABA, or related field working directly with individuals to adapt and modify instruction based on individuals needs.

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Prior experience not required, we provide extensive training sessions. Candidates must have weekend availability to provide swim lessons and will be trained through a gradual shadow and observation process.
  • Interest and ability to work directly with children with physical and intellectual disabilities
  • Aquatics certifications preferred but not required, training provided


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Must be physically and mentally capable to demonstrate the skills of required certifications
  • Must be able to be exposed to chlorine and other pool chemicals
  • Must be able to be exposed to pool water up to 20 hours per week
  • Physically and mentally acts appropriately and immediately to unexpected circumstances
