Scope of Job
To perform advanced interpreting work utilizing comprehensive or specialized skills with knowledge of interpreter ethics. To provide interpreting for students or employees with hearing impairments in academic or workplace situations.

Description of Duties
  • Interprets (primarily voice to sign) for deaf or hard of hearing individuals in academic and designated work situations.
  • Performs interpreting work in classrooms, labs, special events, and other University related settings.
  • Prepares for assignment by reviewing specific terminology and content related to assigned material.
  • Assesses whether communication is being understood.
  • Assists with registration, orientation, tours, and presentations for students with disabilities.
  • Participates in events that promote Student Accessibility Services goals among the student population.
  • Serves as resource for information related to deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Adheres to the RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) Code of Professional conduct.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Education
Bachelor’s Degree along with previous departmental experiences/training may be required.

Specific training or certification may be required in assigned area. BEI Certification preferred.

Required Experience
Previous experience in a similar position. Knowledge of personal computer, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software or specialized equipment based on assignment.

Telecommunication Device for the Deaf, PC, calculator, other standard office equipment.

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Classroom or office conditions. Working conditions may be determined by the situation requiring interpreting and may vary from the usual classroom or office environment.

This assignment is for 19 hours per week and is scheduled for Monday – Friday, however, schedule may vary.
This is a part-time temporary assignment, non-benefits eligible.

Other
Excellent customer service and communication skills. Capacity to multitask under pressure, respond professionally to all inquiries and finish data collection tasks with high quality. Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students and the public. Ability to exercise judgment and collaborate effectively in the solution of practical program relating to office operations and data collection. Teamwork is a must.
