Job description
Essential Functions:1. Perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages in a very professional, kind and courteous manner. Have skills in performing phlebotomy on infants and children using heel sticks, finger sticks and venipuncture.
2. Process specimens by centrifuging samples and protecting the integrity of each
sample insuring storage requirements. Perform tests and report test results.
A. Performs only those moderate complexity tests authorized by the
laboratory director and that require a degree of skill commensurate
with the individual’s education, training or experience, and technical
abilities.
3. Each individual must:
A. Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing,
test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
B. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are
tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
C. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies, document all quality
control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and
maintenance performed.
D. Follow the established policies and procedures whenever test
systems are not within the laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of
performance.
E. Maintain certain moderate complexity instrumentation (ACT 2 Diff,
CA620 and D10) and troubleshoot malfunctions of the instruments
ensuring that any problems with quality control and patient testing are
discussed with the MFM Lab Manager or Technical Supervisor.
F. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test
performance and immediately notify one of the technologists.
G. Under the supervision of a technologist, document all corrective actions
taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established
performance characteristics.
H. Work together as a team with other members of the lab staff to
complete all work for the day.
I. Cooperate, work and communicate with providers, staff and supervisors in
the following ways:
1. Communicate with the nursing staff concerning blood draws and lab test information. Assist them with any blood drawing needs to ensure patients receive the best care possible.
2. Work together with the receptionists on scheduling patients for blood draws, making sure the order is available before the blood is drawn from the patient.
3. Check all lab requisitions for diagnoses, collection date and
physician before transferring them to the business office for
computer entry and billing. Be sure to have all Medicare patients
sign the Advanced Beneficiary Notice when deemed necessary.
J. Follow all regulatory policies and procedures including safety, HIPAA and
the fraud and abuse compliance plan. Maintain strict confidentiality at all
times.
