The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for a
Laboratory Technician 5 in Lansing, MI.
Position Summary:
Position Summary:
- Collecting, preparing and analyzing process related and environmental samples throughout the system within the specifications set by the laboratory.
- Maintain calibration, routine repair and housekeeping of laboratory and equipment.
- Performs other departmental tasks as assigned.
Essential Functions:
- Adheres to process quality assurance/quality control procedures.
- Collects, prepares, analyzes, and records results for applicable samples and/or reagents.
- Maintains, calibrates and repairs assigned lab and equipment.
- Monitors process analyzer operation and writes work orders for needed maintenance.
- Orders and maintains required supplies and equipment.
- Monitors bulk chemical inventories and orders chemicals.
- Receives delivery of bulk chemicals and instructs others on receiving of bulk chemicals when not on site.
- Utilizes database and other software programs to complete work assignments.
- Provides data to chemical supply vendor and assists with problem solving activities and corrective actions.
- Maintains housekeeping of lab and equipment. Interprets results from testing and recommends corrective action.
- Prepares and maintains applicable reports and records.
- Assists in preparing applicable permits and filings.
- Works with and assists other BWL departments with respect to safety and environmental issues.
- Adheres to quality assurance/control procedures.
- Performs other departmental tasks as assigned.
- Required to follow BWL Safety Manual and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Attends training for safety awareness or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.
Job Specifications:
- Four years of experience and a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or related field as indicated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Must have passed one college level chemistry class.
- Must have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel as determined by a standardized assessment.
- Must maintain all required licenses.
- Must have proficient verbal and written communication skill.
- Must have valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
- Occasional walking, climbing and traversing over various terrains.
- Moderate stooping, crouching and kneeling.
- Frequently required to sit, talk, hear and listen.
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally with employees, management, other departments, customers, and outside agencies.
- Ability to enter and retrieve data from computerized, typed and written sources.
- Ability to lift four to thirty pounds of field equipment and tools.
- Normal office environment and field work with possible exposure to varying temperatures, dust, and noise.
