NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs


If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range

$116,600 - $229,500

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate¿s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like


The W87-1 Telemetry team is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer (R&D S&E, Electronics Engineer) to join our team! This role is specifically for the W87-1 Joint Test Assembly 10 Telemetry. The Lead Electrical Engineer will have responsibility for all aspects of the component’s electrical design and ensure it meets functional and electrical interface requirements. As the lead, you will be responsible for fully understanding the system requirements, negotiating them as necessary, and driving the electrical team to design accordingly. You and your team will be charged with producing a design, manufacturing prototypes, verifying the design meets requirements, and working with the production agency to manufacture the resulting product for future flight tests.

The position will interact routinely with personnel across multiple SNL organizations, as well as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and production agencies throughout the NNSA nuclear security enterprises.

On any given day, the Lead Electrical may be called to:

  • Direct the efforts of the team to execute objectives
  • Represent the Telemetry electrical team to W87-1 systems engineering, LLNL and production agency partners
  • Conduct system architecture assessment
  • Provide consultancy on qualification plans and testing to demonstrate that the design meets requirements
  • Direct trade studies, modeling and simulation, and prototype testing
  • Lead development and negotiation of electrical interface requirements
  • Coordinate design efforts with the mechanical and firmware teams
  • Lead schematic reviews
  • Contribute to functional testing of individual printed wiring assemblies or completed Telemetry systems
  • Oversee production of development hardware

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s degrees in a relevant STEM discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience
  • Eight years’ engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Demonstrated experience designing electronic Printed Wiring Boards and Printed Wiring Assemblies (PWA) including analog and digital circuit design, or FPGA firmware development and implementation
  • Hands-on experience testing and de-bugging circuitry with tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Active U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or relevant technical field, with at least 4 years of relevant experience
  • Top-notch verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling

About Our Team


Sandia California's Telemetry Departments develop and maintain telemetry systems in support of the nuclear deterrence surveillance mission. Telemetry systems has responsibility for all aspects of telemetry development, including conceptual design, prototype development and testing, and transitioning production work to DOE production agencies. Telemetry systems integrate precision sensor electronics and signal conditioning with RF communication systems to support flight testing of Joint Test Assemblies. Work is performed by teams of electrical engineers and mechanical engineers, in partnership with quality engineering, reliability engineering, and project management. Current development mission assignments include the W88 ALT370 JTA8 project, the W78 JTA6R project, and the W76 JTA3 project, W80-4 JTA, W87-0 JTA4, among others.

Security Clearance


Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
