Job Description:
Maryland Environmental Service is seeking a Lead Environmental Specialist (or Senior Lead, depending on experience) within the Technical and Environmental Services Group to provide on-site environmental compliance program services to Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) at its headquarters office in Hanover, MD. This position will provide environmental management for MDOT’s operational activities, working with various MDOT modals to develop multi-media environmental policies and procedures, implement programs for environmental compliance in transportation facilities operations and maintenance and participate in periodic reviews to ensure that these activities are addressed within MDOT’s Environmental Management Systems. This position will also assist with other various environmental activities that MDOT must execute. The preferred candidate will promote environmental sustainability and stewardship, including assistance with the development and implementation of an MDOT-wide environmental and risk management strategy.
Preferred skills include familiarity with environmental management systems and standards, ability to proactively identify, minimize, and if necessary, mitigate environmental compliance issues. Comprehensive knowledge of environmental practices, regulatory issues and programs, facilities management and safety activities, ability to be self-directed and manage multiple activities.
Estimated Pay Range:
Lead ES: $58,312.44 - $80,000
Senior Lead ES: $64,143.55 - $88,000

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology or a related field from an accredited college or university plus:
Lead Environmental Specialist - five years of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering or management, two years of which must have included responsibility managing environmental projects and supervising environmental professional and technical staff.
Senior Lead Environmental Specialist – six years of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering or management, three years of which must have included responsibility managing environmental projects and supervising environmental professional and technical staff.
Applicants may substitute an applicable advanced education degree for up to two years of the required experience.
Must have a valid driver's license with less than five points, possess the ability to lift 50 pounds and possess strong communication skills, both orally and in writing. Must be computer literate: specifically with respect to spreadsheets and word processing.
