Cities are the frontline in tackling climate change. Over half of the world’s population live in cities, consuming 78% of the world’s primary energy and producing 70% of carbon emissions. By 2050, over two-thirds of the population is set to live in cities.
As part of its
Net Zero Carbon Cities
initiative, the World Economic Forum is working to create an enabling environment for clean electrification and circularity, resulting in urban decarbonization and resilience. The program aims to do this by fostering public-private collaboration to bridge the gap across the energy, built environment and transport sectors.
Over the course of the next 18 months, the World Economic Forum will expand this work within North America and Europe, mobilizing action and progress in three cities. Towards this end, the Forum plans to convenes key government and business stakeholders to identify priority decarbonization solutions and kick start work on implementation and collaboration around these solutions. To maximize the benefit and reach of this work, these efforts will be complemented by a strategic communications strategy, disseminating outcomes on the World Economic Forum’s global platform. In addition, learnings and case studies will be added to the Forum’s
Toolbox of Solutions
, a free virtual knowledge hub.
Reporting Lines & Interactions
The Lead for Net Zero Carbon Cities will report to the Forum's Head of Urban Transformation, with a direct line to the Head of Clean Power and Electrification on the Energy, Materials and Infrastructure Platform. The Lead will work internally with colleagues across the organisation, and externally with a broad range of stakeholders, from city and national level governments to companies from sectors including electricity, technology, oil and gas, engineering, infrastructure, real estate and mobility, as well as civil society and academia.

The Lead will develop the strategy and be responsible for planning, stakeholder relations and execution of the Net Zero Carbon Cities work in North America and Europe, as well as managing some of the related global program strategy, tools and communications. Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following:
This entrepreneurial role places you on the front line of engaging with city and business leaders. The Lead will develop the strategy and be responsible for planning, stakeholder relations and execution of the Net Zero Carbon Cities work in North America and Europe, as well as managing some of the related global program strategy, tools and communications. Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following:
City Sprint Workshops (65% time)
- Develop the North America and Europe strategy in partnership with key stakeholders and the Forum, identifying and securing three target locations. Execute and facilitate all activities.
- Build relationships with key business, government and civil society stakeholders for participation in the Program and City Sprint process, as well as those interested to deliver on the follow up implementation phases lead by the city.
- Design agendas and relevant content aligned with stakeholder priority issues. Conducting advance research and pre-workshop interviews, writing or sourcing pre-read materials, and collaborating with World Economic Forum colleagues who may want to lead follow up workshops going more in-depth on certain topics.
Fundraising, Donor Engagement and Relations (15% time)
- Develop a clear and compelling theory of change and funding proposals to see this initiative scale in a sustainable manner
- Lead relationship management with current funder, external stakeholders and pipeline of potential funders
- Maintain donor reporting and updates
Curation of the
Toolbox of Solutions
(10% time)
- Contribute new ideas from the City Sprints and/or create partnerships to develop new content and case studies
- Amplify and disseminate the content through strategic communications
- Help ensure that this online database of best practices and case studies for urban decarbonization is a go-to resource for city stakeholders worldwide.
Strategic Communications (10%)
- Drive impact by building awareness and shaping the global agenda through strategic communications and global meetings
- Amplify key outcomes and best practices through articles, video and other thought leadership.
Preferred Requirements and Experience
- 7+ years of professional experience at the intersection of cities, sustainability and decarbonization
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a related field
- Understanding of how local governments work, including prior experience leading or collaborating on initiatives with city officials and/or departments
- Proven excellent project management and coordination skills; especially to manage both long- and short-term objectives.
- Ability to facilitate meetings and interactions among executive leaders and helping to turn ideas into tangible action and impact.
- Strong interest in driving impact and systems change at the intersection of urban and energy transformation.
- Interpersonal skills and stakeholder relationship management
- Fundraising experience and know-how
- Some travel will be required
