We are seeking a creative, self-starting scientist or engineer who is motivated to contribute to innovative efforts in understanding radiation effects on space missions. As a team member, you will develop interpersonal networks and cultivate collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams that may include mission scientists, spacecraft and instrument systems engineers, design engineers, and mission planners. Our team has been a crucial part of the development and production of ground-breaking spacecraft systems such as New Horizons, the Van Allen Probes, Europa Clipper, and many more. In this position, you will evaluate the space radiation environment around Earth and among the stars, along with assessing its effect on space systems.

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. As a Lead Radiation Effects Engineer you will...
- Collaborate with all program team members to ensure electronic piece-parts will survive the expected radiation environments on assigned projects.
- Run radiation environment and transport codes. Competence in codes such as MCNP, GEANT, FastRad, NOVICE, OMERE, IRENE, and others is highly encouraged!
- Develop requirements, plans, and fixturing for radiation testing of EEE devices and associated materials.
- Successfully complete radiation experiments. This includes execution at our in-house ionizing dose sources as well as off-site test campaigns for neutron, heavy ion, or other relevant environments.
- Implement efficient data collection and management, pre-test research, and post-test analysis to enable clear, concise reporting on the performed test campaigns.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum requirements if you...
- Hold a B.S. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering or science field.
- Have 2 or more years of demonstrated proficiency in the radiation effects in electronics field.
- Have acceptable research and oral communication skills, and the ability to work with a wide range of collaborators.
Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Are able to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You go above and beyond the minimum requirements if you...
- Hold a M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related engineering or science field.
- Have 7 or more years of demonstrated proficiency in the radiation effects in electronics field with a focus on test data compilation and space-environment simulation.
- Have experience coordinating radiation test and analysis efforts for a flight program.
- Have experience with MCNP, FastRad, GEANT, NOVICE, and/or other radiation transport codes.
- Have experience with developing efficient, effective data management strategies.
- Have experience with radiation testing methods and facilities.
- Have experience with other space environmental effects (e.g. detector noise evaluation, internal charging, surface charging).
- Have excellent research and oral communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of collaborators.
