Criminal Legal Assistant
ROLE
We need an experienced Criminal Legal Assistant to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) United States Attorney’s Office (USAO), Western District of Kentucky (WDKY). The United States Attorney’s Office, Western District of Kentucky, represents the United States in criminal and civil legal matters as well as collect debts owed to the Federal Government which are administratively uncollectible. The mission of the United States Attorneys is to serve as the nation's principal litigators under the direction of the Attorney General. In this role, you will support the USAO by providing direct legal support, clerical and administrative support, and automated litigation assistance. This is a full-time opportunity. RESPONSIBILITIES
Legal Support
- Examine, prepare, and processes a variety of technical, voluminous, and complex legal documents
- Review incoming material and independently determine the need to assembly and preparation of legal documents
- Handle complaints, motions, orders, search and tracking warrants, subpoenas, etc
- Ensure that all documents are in conformance with rules governing style and format
- Prepare discovery packages for distribution, ensure discovery is complete and necessary redactions are made
- Assist attorneys with trial preparation by compiling notebooks, compiling witness and exhibit lists, and organizing discovery documents
- Establish and maintain a variety of files and ensure appropriate filing is accomplished correctly and timely
- Compose original letters such as discovery and proffer letters, requests for extension of time, declination letters, etc.
Administrative Support
- Receive visitors and telephone callers
- Furnish requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, and functions / procedures of the office
- Determine which matters should be referred to the AUSA and urgency of the matter
- Perform docketing duties such as opening, updating, and closes cases through use of the automated case tracking system
- Search database for required information
- Maintain calendar of assigned active cases
- Schedule court appointments, interviews, and conferences
- Provide reminders of commitments and court appearances
- Develop and maintain suspense system for ongoing cases and inform AUSA’s of pending dates and deadlines
- Maintain filing and ensure all documents are promptly and accurately places in the case file
- Produce a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications
- Ensure proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar of produced material
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Two (2) years of experience in a legal setting
- Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, document management and review, file management systems, and data entry
- Proficiency with office technology, including but not limited to computers, fax machines, and copier machines
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of varying legal backgrounds
- Proficiency in organizational skills and the ability to multitask assignments
- Ability to work in high paced environment
PREFERRED SKILLS
- Prior experience in complex criminal legal assistant roles
EDUCATION
- Associate degree required
- Area of paralegal study or paralegal certificate preferred

- Must pass a requisite security processing as directed by the USAO

WORK HOURS
- Work to be performed between Monday and Friday
- Work is to be performed between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
TRAVEL
- Occasional travel required

Specific vision abilities required by this job include the use of computer monitor screens up to 80% of the time.
