Job description
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Neurology is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse to support the Neurology Clinic. This position functions as a member of the ambulatory patient care team and performs technical, patient care and care-related clerical functions (i.e., coordinating all elements of the patient visit, etc.) while under direct supervision of licensed independent practitioners (LIP), register nurses (RN), nurse manager/assistant nurse manager (NM/ANM), or other licensed designee.

Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships.

Implements and contributes to the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse, providing appropriate care with regard to patient’s condition and age.

Administers medications according to policies and procedures.

Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Observes patients for changes in physical condition throughout stay and reports changes to registered nurse.

Performs computer functions within scope of role.

Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents.

Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy.

Assists staff during emergencies, within the scope of practice.

Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.

Contributes to the learning experience of students.

Supports and contributes to the education of patients and families.

Practices within legal boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act.

Complies with annual competency review guidelines.

Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.

Adheres to UIHC policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality.

Licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with the Iowa Board of Nursing, or eligible for temporary work permit. Responsible to take the required continuing education hours to maintain a valid LPN certification.

Basic Cardiac Life Support provider

Has experience working in a health care environment with direct patient care

Ability to communicate effectively with hospital staff

Strong written communication skills

Customer service experience

Previous healthcare support experience

Demonstrated competency in medical terminology

Demonstrated computer skills and ability to navigate the EMR
