POSITION SUMMARY

Through our Community Health and Wellness programming and services, the West Cook YMCA delivers evidence-based health interventions designed to reduce health risks, improve health equity, and promote lifestyle change in a supportive environment. Lifestyle Coaches create a welcoming environment, ensure program fidelity, and encourage participant success. These individuals facilitate discussion-based chronic disease prevention programs including but not limited to Diabetes Prevention, Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring, YMCA’s Weight Loss, and LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivorship.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Prepare before each class. Arrive for classes 10-15 minutes early in appropriate attire. Be accessible to participants both before and after classes to address questions or concerns.

2. Unconditionally adhere to curriculum and program protocols.

3. Create a safe, judgment-free, and encouraging environment that is friendly and welcoming to all. Build authentic relationships with participants. Help participants connect with one another and the YMCA. Display empathy, support and encourage goal setting, and follow up with participants who miss class.

4. Encourage group participation and interaction through use of open-ended questions and other facilitation skills.

5. Within 48 hours of each program session, enter and maintain accurate attendance and program data to maintain certifications.

6. Ensure participant confidentiality and adhere to the YMCA’s HIPAA policies and procedures.

7. Be diligent in maintaining communication through West Cook YMCA email.

8. Attend and contribute to all mandatory staff meetings and trainings. Report any issues or concerns to the Manager.

9. Substitute for other instructors to encourage overall quality programming and staff support. Maintain proper communication with supervisor when seeking/offering to substitute any class. If for any reason a substitute is needed, it is the instructor’s responsibility to find a substitute.

10. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Respond to all injuries and assist in immediate first aid and proper emergency procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as needed.

11. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager or Director.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND REQUISITES

1. Two years or more of college education in a related field or equivalent preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

2. Strong facilitation skills and comfort with public speaking. Knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques highly desired.

3. Strong ability to build community within a group and have empathy for individuals from all walks of life.

4. Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid. Must have or be willing to obtain required training and certification, including evidence-based health initiative instructor trainings.

5. Must have a flexible schedule including ability to work early mornings, in the evenings and/or on weekends.

6. Must be willing to travel locally to community locations to administer programming.

7. Must be willing to travel, potentially to other states, to receive program trainings.

8. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Ability to work at least a 10-15-hour work week that will include weekend/evening hours.

2. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

3. Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

4. Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 40 lbs.

5. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.

6. Position may require rigorous physical activities, bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

COMPENSATION

· Total compensation $25/hour, part-time

· YMCA Family Membership

· Qualifying part-time employees will also receive PTO.
