Basic Objective and Purpose of the Position

The Prototype Machinist supports the Engineering team through the fabrication, building, testing, troubleshooting and modification of prototype products and testers.

**Key Responsibilities –**reasonable accommodations may be made to enable persons with disabilities to carry out the essential functions:

Fabricate, modify, and assemble mechanical components for the Engineering team

  • Develop, fabricate, and construct assembly and test fixtures in cooperation with Engineers
  • Set up and operate powered machine tools such as manual toolroom lathes and mills, surface grinders, wire EDM, sinker EDM, 5-axis CNC mills and CNC lathes and related equipment required to meet customer demand. (Jig-grinding experience is a plus)
  • Use CAM software to create efficient and repeatable toolpaths
  • Handle prototype product testing programs in consultation with Engineers, including reporting data and maintaining test environments
  • Handle engineering model shop including maintenance of equipment, tooling, and supplies
  • Handle engineering model shop schedule in coordination with Manager, and NPI Project leads
  • Handle engineering model shop safety program, including PPE and training requirements
  • Participate in the product development process and provide input during concept development and feasibility testing
  • Assess manufacturability of new designs and provide improvement feedback to Engineers
  • Create special assembly tooling per product assembly requirements

Qualifications

** Education, Experience & Certifications**

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 5 to 10 years’ operating, setting up, and programming CNC mills and lathes
  • With good CAD/CAM experience
  • Good to have Solid works and Mastercam experience

Essential Skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills uses rigorous logic and methods to solve problems producing effective solutions to problem statements.
  • Strong technical skills. Ability to set up and run a variety of machines while holding very tight tolerances with limited direction creating quality parts to spec on prototype parts (first part, good part). Primary equipment: OD, ID, and surface Grinders as well as rough and precision slicers. Lathe, Mill and EDM machines as secondary skill
  • Strong machine shop math and complex blueprint reading skills, including GD&T
  • Able to develop required fixturing and tooling to perform everyday tasks
  • Able to understand G and M codes
  • Able to adjust programs for optimal speed, reliability, and tool life
  • Knowledge and use of a wide variety of precision measuring equipment
  • Innovation - Apply our collective machining knowledge to make "impossible parts"
  • Evaluate prints and solid model CAD Files
  • To excel in this position, you must leverage those skills to be proficient at CAD/CAM programming, setup, and operation of CNC machines
  • Machining on Magnetic Material is a plus

  • Near Visual Acuity (either corrected or uncorrected).

  • Ability to understand verbal direction and instruction. Ability to give feedback to engineers and brainstorm with others on the prototype team. Must be able to read, understand and comply with all quality and safety regulations.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (ITAR).
