About ICRW:
The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) advances rights and opportunities for women and girls to ensure a more gender-equal world. For 45 years, ICRW has been the world's leading non-profit building evidence and promoting solutions for how to improve the lives of women, girls and other marginalized people.

Our research, advocacy and advisory programs focus on economic opportunity, women's health, gender norms, positive youth development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence, and equitable workplaces. Our partners and clients include community-based and nongovernmental organizations; bilateral and multilateral agencies; foundations, philanthropists and corporations; governments; and academic and financial institutions.

Assignment Background:
ICRW seeks a Men Engagement Consultant to conduct a short-term assignment in support of the PepsiCo-USAID Global Development Alliance (GDA), Investing in Women to Strengthen Supply Chains. The GDA is implemented by Resonance Global and ICRW, in partnership with PepsiCo Sustainability and Agronomy teams in India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Colombia, and Peru.

The consultancy Scope of Work (SOW) consists of two related workstreams that aim to build GDA project staff's skills for facilitating trainings and engaging with decision makers and external partner organizations on topics of gender equity and women's empowerment. It is key that project staff see themselves as gender champions and change agents who are ambassadors of the GDA, who have critically reflected on gender and social norms in their context, and challenged some of their own attitudes and assumptions before stepping into difficult conversations with external partners.

Objective:
The aim of this assignment is to enable GDA staff to own the GDA's core change curriculum (Gender-Smart Leadership Lab; GSLL), further see the value of the work, and build confidence in their capacity to deliver GSLL trainings and fluently engage men in agribusiness on gender-related topics. The intended outcome is stronger GDA team internal capacity on gender equity and men engagement. This links to the GDA's larger goals of effectively influencing PepsiCo suppliers and staff in potato and plantain sourcing markets, and embedding gender-responsive aspects of the program such as the Gender-Smart Leadership Lab training suite and “Gender-Smart Farm” supplier intervention model into aspects of corporate policies and practices for PepsiCo and other food and beverage corporations.

Expertise:
To deliver on the assignment, the consultant should have expertise in discussing and framing social and gender norms around women's employment and entrepreneurship from the perspective of motivating men and business leaders to think and act more inclusively. The consultant will review existing GSLL training materials and provide fresh strategies and applications that country teams could use in a real life scenario to deliver modules more effectively.

The consultant should have experience guiding teams to refine key messages to make them more appealing and inspiring for men (eg. PepsiCo suppliers and buyers); equipping staff with a menu of options based on the stakeholder's reaction; giving staff the opportunity to practice delivering relevant exercises and positive messages together; and helping staff to experience a shift themselves, by going through activities that they will facilitate with external stakeholders in the future and walking in their shoes.

Workstreams:
  • GSLL Curriculum Review:
  • Review modules of Gender-Smart Leadership Lab (two versions of same core methodology for PepsiCo Staff and Suppliers)
  • Have calls with 3-4 Gender Inclusion Coordinators to gather additional program context on experience to date with delivery of GSLL Modules 1-3 to PepsiCo staff.
  • Suggest revisions to global curriculum (for PepsiCo and Suppliers). Sync and contextualize messages around the benefits to men of gender equality, the case for investing in women farmers and workers, and men's involvement in creating more equitable agribusiness workplaces and supply chains. Highlight any specific modifications to be made for the Supplier version of the GSLL, to be launched with farm/business owners in the second half of 2023.
  • GDA Staff Capacity Strengthening:
  • Develop eight 90-minute internal training sessions to be conducted virtually with project staff to build team capacity on men engagement and social norms change. The consultant should space out the training plan to provide learning and practice opportunities, but maintain pace to deliver all sessions within 1-2 months so the teams do not lose momentum.
  • Topics can include, eg:
  • Core Concepts and Framing
  • Principles of Engaging Men
  • Strategies for Engaging Men
  • Adapting Approaches to Agribusiness Supply Chains
  • Integrating Men Engagement Approaches in GDA Countries
  • Effective Facilitation
  • Updates to GSL Lab: Review the updated GSLL curriculum, highlighting changes and suggestions to adjust framing for the launch of Supplier GSLL cohorts with new farmers/managers in their program areas.
  • Practice Engaging Men: Create a virtual setting for participants to practice facilitating GSLL exercises and utilize their new skills and facilitation tips learned in previous sessions. Provide feedback and elicit peer critique so participants excel in delivering and owning the curriculum.
  • Facilitate eight sessions (in English) as the global program team is available, likely on Tuesdays and Thursdays for four consecutive weeks in June (DC morning time to enable participation from teams around the globe) with approximately 15 project staff. Consider tech and/or personnel support to deliver sessions in Spanish simultaneously or separately, to be discussed.
  • As a result, staff should be able to respond and rebound from challenging or resistant conversations in the moment and achieve greater buy-in for gender equity programming from men counterparts within the company and supplier base.
Intended Timeline:
To be delivered between April 1-July 30, with virtual trainings targeted in June.

Interested candidates should submit a proposal including the following:

  • Technical narrative of no longer than 4 pages describing how they will accomplish the tasks listed above
  • Brief summaries of 3-4 examples of relevant previous work
  • Detailed budget with budget notes
  • CV
Submissions must be received by 5:00pm EST on March 31, 2023.
