Under the direction of the VP Operations, the XGS Operations Management Trainee will be responsible for the successful completion of the 12 to 18 month Leadership Development Course. The position is an entry-level role and requires extensive travel to complete the curriculum. Course curriculum is intended to provide the candidate with a broad view of the transportation business. Upon successful completion of the courses, the candidate will be placed in a front-line management position. Relocation is required within a regional area. Promotional opportunities will be based on overall performance.
What will you be doing as a management trainee at XGS?
- Report directly to the VP of Operations; you will support our business development effort
- Travel to XGS locations 50 to 75% of the time
- Have the ability to be flexible for varying work schedules
- Learn new software and XGS technology
- Learn all aspects of XGS business segments
- Travel to sites and manage accounts
- At the completion of the training program, you will be fully versed in all XGS operations processes, procedures, DOT and company rules and regulations on Hours of Service
- Learn to build and maintain positive professional relationships with drivers and safe, reliable outside carriers to ensure seamless new carrier set-up, minimize turnover and maximize ongoing productivity
- Learn to assign loads and plan, route, and monitor freight movement to provide safe, on-time service and meet customer requirements, including managing freight exceptions and driver ETA adjustments based on pick-up and delivery schedules, and other environmental factors on the road
- Learn to maintain the Company's safety culture to include daily driver safety messages, monthly driver safety briefings, quarterly driver training, annual reviews, and enforce company policies to ensure DOT compliance and company safety requirements are being met
- Learn to work with drivers, customers, and company personnel to resolve service issues, routing and/or planning, mechanical problems, accessorial pay related issues, etc., as they occur throughout the day and, where necessary, when on call
- Learn to manage yard including checking/inspecting equipment, and coordinating with maintenance to ensure all regular preventative maintenance services are scheduled on time and all safety related mechanical issues are fixed for account equipment (as required)
- Learn to perform administrative duties such as payroll, management of center level P&L budget and P&L statements, driver counseling, accident reviews, filing and documenting, resolving pay issues, invoicing and/or creating operational or financial reports
- Gain knowledge on how to manage inventory, assets, customer pools and/or assignment of drivers to balance equipment in market
- Become proficient in maximizing efficiency of fleet operations and profitability and making recommendations for continuous improvement, measuring key performance indicators, and creating, maintaining and presenting customer specific reporting and financial analysis through face-to-face interactions at customer location
- Learn to utilize personnel management including training and orientation of drivers and/or employees including the training and assistance with internal and third party (customer) systems
- Fill in for absent or unavailable personnel and on special projects related to optimizing fleet operations and achieving profitability
What is XGS looking for in a successful candidate for the trainee role?
To be successful in this position you must be a quick learner, self-driven, disciplined, and thoughtful, natural with follow-up and follow-through, detail-oriented and comfortable being outside the domicile office location 50% of the time, traveling to XGS locations across the United States. Most importantly, you will have a genuine interest in transportation and learning supply chain management.
The ideal candidate for this position must also be able to stay organized, multi-task and effectively manage their time. We are looking for an individual that is ambitious, eager to learn and willing to work hard toward their own career goals and development.
What is required to become a trainee under this program at XGS?
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management or business management (recent graduate, preferred)
- OR
- Four years of experience in a related field (warehousing, transportation, logistics)
- Familiarity with business software such as Microsoft Office
- A high level of business ethics and confidentiality
- Excellent interpersonal and customer-facing skills
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- The flexibility and willingness to learn
- The ability to work as part of a team
- The ability to work accurately, with attention to detail
What can you expect with placement after the trainee program?
A management trainee will be placed in one of our more than 39 facilities across the continental United States. Placement time is between 12 and 18 months of starting the management training program. Your path is defined by your particular traits, skills and talents. Those in our top management positions all paved their way by developing and strengthening their own abilities throughout their XGS careers.

What is the environment like at XGS?
Most work is conducted in a hybrid office / warehouse environment. Personal protective equipment must be worn in all areas as required. Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, everyone must be careful while performing warehouse tasks.
