American Public Education, Inc (APEI) is seeking a talented Manager for Database Administration and will be responsible for leading, delivering, and supporting enterprise database solutions for APEI and its Educational Units. The Manager, Database Administration is accountable for database development, delivery, operations, and support and will lead continuous improvement and overall team performance. This person will provide leadership to work effectively and efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, collaborating with internal and external software engineering,
Responsibilities:
- Must have strong hands-on leadership, direction, and support to the DBA team
- Ensures best practices are documented and followed to anticipate, mitigate, and resolves problems affecting database performance, efficiency, and availability.
- Accountable to manage, coordinate, and optimize development and support efforts.
- Leads and manages layout and administration of moderately complex database applications to accommodate a variety of user needs.
- Leads and executes disaster recovery and business continuity requirements.
- Performs installations, configurations, backups, recovery, and tunes database performance.
- Support code reviews and provide solutions/guidance to issues faced by DB and application developers during SDLC.
- Ensure engineering best practices through agile development, automation, robust application monitoring, resilience, etc.; establishes/updates policies and procedures.
- Administers and maintains end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
- Configures and tunes systems and enterprise scheduler; manages updates, patches, and upgrades for system availability and compliance.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes proposals, and participates in the planning of maintenance, new, or enhanced technologies or services.
- Clearly communicates problem and resolution process to IT and Business partners.
- Participates in the change control process.
- Evaluates performance and costs through regular reporting and summaries of the systems including availability, usage, and capacity.
- Maintains database security in compliance with company policies, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards.
- Ensures 24x7x365 availability for critical data services.
- Provides On-Call and after Business hours support as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making ability.
- Proven ability to work independently and as a manager to coordinate deliverables with other department activities.
- Expertise with Microsoft SQL server, SSMS, T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS, etc.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills.
- Competency in backup schemes and disaster recovery.
- Ability to model databases for business applications.
- Ability to manage demands of a fluid and changing environment.
- Willingness and ability to learn new skills.
Required Experience:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in Information Technology, including 5+ years of strong hands-on experience with database modeling, extraction tools, and replication technologies (solutioning, designing, installing, configuring, and administrating), in Microsoft SQL Server.
- 3+ years demonstrated success leading and managing DBA team and projects is required.
- 3+ years hands-on public/private cloud, ITIL, and support of Microsoft SQL server, T-SQL, SSIS, and SSRS.
- Strong experience with SQL and Data Modeling
- Solid understanding of Data Warehouse, Data Lake, transactional applications on various data store technologies.
- Must have a thorough understanding of security practices such as LDAP, SSL, SSO, and certificate management.
- Have an in-depth understanding of KPIs related to Service Level Agreements
- Experience leading and growing onshore/offshore DBAs across multiple work streams simultaneously
- Demonstrated ability to develop and communicate estimates and deliverables.
- Excellent communication, technical writing and documentation skills are essential
- Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) or equivalent a plus
