Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Energy expenditures represent nearly $60 million a year and are a huge component of the UMD operating budget; energy is a key strategic resource with significant economic and environmental consequences. Recognizing the valuable role of energy, the Manager will be responsible for developing and coordinating the University’s energy conservation initiative, and implementing cost efficiencies through energy efficiency projects, strategic commodities purchase with a focus on fiscal and environmental impacts in support of the University’s accelerated 2025 carbon neutrality goal. Responsible for identifying and administering energy efficiency programs that lead to reduced energy consumption at the University of Maryland, College Park. Develops implements and monitors the energy policy that coordinates with the environmental stewardship guidelines. Leads the development and maintenance of energy use metrics, implementation of building benchmarking, and oversight of energy audits. Position will interface with the Asst. Director of Facilities Performance Group to effectively utilize existing systems for energy management. This position will also play a key role in commodities (natural gas and power) purchasing and management as well as other available programs within PJM Regional Transmission Organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Sustainability, or another technical field, with demonstrated knowledge of energy systems, energy use metrics, and the deregulated energy market.
Experience:
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience with energy management (including demand side management) and project management with demonstrated knowledge of energy systems, energy use metrics, and the deregulated energy market.
- Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
- Prior experience with large data sets, energy use metrics or commodities purchasing.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge and expertise with Demand Side Management programs.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building systems and their effect on energy consumption and efficiency.
- Ability to conduct long-range planning and to prepare cost estimates and cost projections.
- Ability to use computers and be adept at word processing, spreadsheet.
- Effective communicator, both in oral and written form.
- Ability to work well with people in a matrix reporting function. Position will work with multiple trades and campus units to implement identified projects.

- Knowledge of or experience with PJM capacity and energy efficiency programs.
- Prior experience with wholesale and retail commodity purchasing in a deregulated market.

CEM (Certified Energy Manager) and/or PE (Professional Engineer).
While a driver’s license is not required for this position, IF driving a state vehicle, incumbent must possess and maintain a MD Class C Driver’s license or equivalent with fewer than 6 points.

The salary range for this position is $113,800-$142,250.
