The Structures team at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is looking for you to join our team as a Structural Engineering Manager.
The Structural Engineering Manager 3 is responsible for providing functional leadership and technical direction. The team consists of a staff of three front line managers with approximately 45 engineers. You will work with fellow engineers to solve the toughest challenges in the industry and deliver world-class performance. As a Structural Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for the leadership, direct supervision, and employee development of a technical staff of structural engineers working on underwater launch, ship power generation and ship propulsion systems. Primary structural engineering group responsibilities include:
- Analyzing, researching and developing structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design
- Analyzing product designs for damage tolerance, durability and design allowables in specific structural engineering specialties including dynamics, shock and vibration, operational loads, stability, fatigue, and thermal analysis
- Maintaining and advancing state-of-the-art analytical software, modeling and simulation capabilities, tools, and high-performance computational SW and HW
- Overseeing the maintenance and development plan for critical skillsets
- Providing technical, cost and schedule performance oversight of multiple projects, including cost account management (CAM)
- Reviewing and approving proposal estimates for new structural and acoustic work
- Developing and implementing employee career development, knowledge sharing and training plans
- Maintaining proper levels of staffing through forecasting and recruiting
- Supporting strategic planning
- Championing and executing continuous process improvements
As an engineering manager, the candidate will work to ensure all staffing needs are met, drives talent development, and instill a culture of technical ownership amongst the Power Electronics Group. The candidate must collaborate with functional and program leadership, business development, business management, mission assurance, product development, and global supply chain management to resolve complex issues in a timely manner often by leading from the front for nascent issues. This manager is also expected to advice future business capture by leading technology road map development and research and development efforts.
Limited travel may be required.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 10 years of engineering experience; OR a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 8 years of engineering experience; OR a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 6 years of engineering experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to comprehend and analyze complex structural design problems and develop solutions
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment
- Ability to supervise and prioritize multiple projects on schedule and within cost
- Ability to analyze data and make decisions that impact the organization’s credibility, operations and services
- Ability to develop work products such as detailed reports, work‐related manuals, publications, etc.
- Ability to present material to those outside the immediate work function, to all levels of the organization, and to a variety of external customers
- US Citizenship with ability to apply for DoD Secret clearance (or higher).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline (preferred Mechanical Engineering).
- Demonstrated leadership, direct supervision, and employee development of a technical staff
- A strong background in the following (or equivalent): Nastran, Abaqus, NX, CREO 2, HyperMesh, Patran, MS Office products
- A familiarity with the following standards: MIL-S-901, MIL-STD-167, MIL-STD-22, S9074-AR-GIB-10_278, PPD 802-6337550, Naval Shipboard Piping Structural Design Manual, British Standard 7608, ASME Section VIII, Division 2, API 579/ASME FFS, AISC Manual.
