The Defense Group at Leidos, supporting the Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (MUSV) Program, is seeking a Master Captain to support a dynamic high growth organization. The MUSV program is based in Port Hueneme, CA, and is responsible for delivering cutting edge autonomous vessel technology to the US Navy. The program operates and maintains prototype autonomous vessels for test and evaluation of the vessels as well as developing operations, maintenance, logistics and training procedures for the autonomous Fleet of the future. We are seeking resilient, innovative team-players with a reputation for excellence. This position will be on-site in Port Hueneme.


Leidos is seeking a Master Captain to join our team in support of work for our customer. This position will consist of a rotation schedule and will be primarily located in Ventura, CA.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Act as Captain on autonomous uncrewable ship accountable for Safety of Life at Sea, Material condition and safe navigation of 60m limited displacement, jet drive powered vessels (i.e. Medium/Overlord Unmanned Surface Vessel M/OUSV).

  • Navigation, oversite, support or conduct of operations and maintenance, of one or more assigned vessels.

  • Perform range support, and document vessel-related activities, including information pertaining to safety, training, operations, maintenance, environment, provisioning, and the safe navigation of the vessel.

  • Properly mobilize and de-mobilize vessels before and after each cruise, including cleaning, system checks, general condition inspection and stocking provisions as required.

  • Maintain the safety and well-being of the crew and passengers, as well as timely execution of the assigned mission.

  • Piloting and docking large USVs in a manned mode.

  • Supervising operations in Autonomous mode and conducting test and evaluation of vessel autonomy, Machinery systems, and payloads at sea.

  • Support of offboard remote either on the shore or from other vessels of opportunity.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and 8+ years of prior relevant experience; or Masters with 6+ years of prior relevant experience. Additional years of related experience will be acceptable in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working with military small watercraft including: High Speed Rough Water.

  • Operational experience with High Speed Craft or Naval Craft rated vessels

  • Operations Military, Commercial, or emergency diving operations.

  • Emergency salvage and rescue operations Maritime Operations planning and execution.

  • Current United States Coast Guard (USCG) 200-ton or greater Master license.

  • Hold a current license of Master of a Motor Vessel of at least USCG 200 Gross Registered Tons and should have at least three years of sea-going experience in a Master position. Furthermore, Ship’s Masters should have experience piloting, anchoring, and docking offshore service vessels.

  • Experience supervising remote operations of vessels, and experience conducting test and evaluation of vessel systems and payloads

  • Licensed personnel shall possess the necessary endorsements on their USCG Merchant Mariner's Document for each job to which they are assigned (e.g., Chief Engineer or Chief Mate).

  • Us citizen with ability to obtain a Secret level DoD Security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Secret level DoD Security clearance.

  • Possess experience with U.S. Navy or USCG small boats within the last ten years.

  • Experience in military small craft operations and procedures, specifically high-speed rough water operations and vessel at-sea transfer.

  • Experience operating in southern California ocean area and OCONUS/international operations (e.g. Pacific transit, Panama canal zone)

  • Experience in emergency salvage and rescue operations.

  • Basic knowledge of Marine systems troubleshooting and maintenance.

  • Experience operating single prop, dual prop, bow thruster equipped, and jet drive vessels.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $97,500.00 - $150,000.00 - $202,500.00
