STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a USAID-supported Global Health talent hub, offering paid fellowships and internships at all career levels. STAR provides participants with immersive experiences at global health organizations and institutions to build capacity and contribute technical expertise to address high-impact needs. STAR Fellows and Interns participate in learning activities to enhance knowledge and skills growth, expand professional networks and support career development. STAR is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI), implemented in partnership with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the Aspen Management Partnership for Health (AMP Health).

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Office of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (GH/MCHN) serves as the Agency’s technical and policy lead on maternal and newborn health, child survival, immunization, nutrition and environmental health, with a focus on preventing child and maternal deaths. Cross-cutting activities managed by the Office in support of this goal address private sector partnerships, social and behavior change communication, multilateral partnerships, gender, and monitoring, evaluation research and learning. GH/MCHN through its Research and Policy Division provides leadership in designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating maternal and child health and nutrition programs. This entails ensuring the technical integrity of USAID’s headquarters and Mission programs, providing global leadership in maternal and child health and nutrition policy and research, and supporting USAID Missions to work with partners, donors and other government agencies to accelerate progress towards the Agency’s goal of preventing child and maternal deaths. The Office comprises the following functional divisions: Maternal and Newborn Health Division; Child Health and Immunization Division; Nutrition and Environmental Health Division; and Research and Policy Division.

Introduction:

The Maternal and Child Health Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and Data Analysis Intern (Intern) will be assigned to the Research and Policy Division of the Office of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition within the Bureau of Global Health at USAID. The Intern will participate in many or all activities undertaken by the M&E team within the Research and Policy Division, including the conducting of analyses, TDYs, writing reports for publication or Congress, monitoring internal USAID data and programs, and providing technical guidance to partners. The intern will also undertake projects of their own interest as time permits, and gain the opportunity to improve skills across a variety of tools, including Tableau, LiST, Stata, ArcGIS, etc.

Reporting structure:

The Intern will work closely with the M&E Team and other members of the Research and Policy Division and receive technical guidance from the Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor, who will serve as their Point of Contact.

OUTCOMES

By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:

• Monitoring and evaluation systems implemented within maternal and child health programs.
• Opportunities to publish a peer-reviewed publication and attend programmatic-related events.
• Synthesis and data analysis of both new and under-utilized information in support of the Research and Policy Division.
• Evaluation of program data.

Essential Duties:

• Conduct secondary analyses of data relevant for monitoring and evaluation of maternal and child health and nutrition programs.
• Assist in ensuring validity and accuracy of databases, collecting missing information from various data sources, and preparing data files.
• Prepare presentations, reports, and other communication documents, including research and information gathering for use in applied settings and that focus on monitoring and evaluation to support MNCH Office programs and priorities.
• Draft manuscript(s) for peer reviewed journals, reports, and other documents related to monitoring and evaluation, particularly as it relates to maternal and child health.
• Attend programmatic-related events within and outside USAID as requested.
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern’s own interests.

Anticipated learning outcomes:

All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:

• Increase knowledge and skills in strategy development that supports Monitoring and Evaluation Systems through Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health program implementation.
• Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
• Deepen understanding of USAID global health programming, policies and organizational culture.

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Required

• Currently enrolled doctoral degree candidate or completion of such within the past 12 months.
• Knowledge and understanding of M&E systems and global health M&E issues related to developing countries.
• Experience with analyzing and managing (e.g., wrangling) health data.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite programs, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, or the Google equivalent.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment with short turnaround times while maintaining high standards. Strong interest in global health and monitoring and evaluation.
• This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks.
• US citizenship or US permanent residency required.

Additional skills (preferred):

• Experience with using STATA, including longitudinal data analysis.
• Experience with analyzing health data from relevant large health data sets (Ex: Demographic and Health Surveys).
• Experience with Tableau, R, Python and GIS software.
