Reports to Supervisor of Transportation

FLSA Status Non-Exempt
Perform skilled work in all vehicular maintenance and repair phases on buses, vans, trucks, tractors, passenger vehicles, and group equipment.
Essential Functions
- Assist in keeping inventory on stock replacement needs
- Attend meetings and in-services as required
- Available for over-time, either a.m. or p.m., when available
- Ensure the safety of students and staff
- Follow-up on drivers' reports of problems with buses or other district-owned vehicles
- Instruct all school bus drivers in the service and maintenance procedures for the vehicles.
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents
- Maintain confidential information
- Maintain vehicles in safe and satisfactory condition at all times
- Make contact with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Participate in in-service training courses as directed
- Participate in the summer bus maintenance program to have all buses ready for the annual inspection by the Ohio Highway Patrol
- Perform all major repairs to Board owned vehicles that may be necessary
- Perform emergency road service during and after regularly scheduled work hours
- Perform routine/preventive maintenance on all Board-owned vehicles according to maintenance schedules
- Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
- Provide proper care of the garage facility, tools, and equipment
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
- Submit all forms and reports as may be required
- Substitute as a bus driver as needed
- Routinely check buses and vehicles for various safety features and safety equipment.
- Assist in maintaining records and reports as directed and/or required by law.
- Furnish report information as requested by the Supervisor of Transportation.
- Maintain garage, tools, supplies, records, and sundry items neat and orderly.
- Keep informed of school transportation rules, regulations, and changes as issued by various departments of the State of Ohio.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on other school equipment, such as lawnmowers, snow equipment, etc.
- Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of all supplies on hand
- Perform housekeeping duties in and around the garage
- Other duties directly related to the position's essential functions may be assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation/Vehicle Maintenance Foreman.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year technical college or technical university
- Related experience
- State of Ohio Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with School Bus and Passenger Endorsement
- State Department of Education Basic School Bus Driver Education Program
- Must be insurable
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board may find appropriate.

- Experience with mechanic troubleshooting

- Knowledge of electrical, air brake systems, welding, cutting torches, and bodywork

- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
- Exposure to high levels of noise, e.g., bus and bus engine
- Occasional interaction with unruly children
- Operation of the vehicle under inclement weather conditions
- Frequent requirement to lift and carry up to approximately 65 pounds
- Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, hear, see (color vision required), read, speak, balance, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop
- Frequent repetitive hand movement, e.g., using hand tools, driving bus
- Frequent travel throughout the area in search of needed parts, supplies, and/or bus equipment; monitor breakdowns and accidents
- Frequent requirement to work on vehicles outside in inclement weather conditions, with proper clothing and equipment, e.g., bus breakdown
- Occasional overtime work may be necessary
- Frequent requirement to push and pull approximately 300 pounds (on wheels)
