Position Summary

DRS Network & Imaging Systems in Cypress, CA is part of the Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems Group of Leonardo DRS and has over 30 years of experience in designing and developing electro-optical/infrared systems for surveillance and targeting applications. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the company in the development of strategic space and weather systems. This position will require the successful candidate to develop precision electro-mechanical/opto-mechanical assemblies from concept to hardware using computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments. Examples include telescope/camera assemblies, positioning systems, vision systems, and electronics packaging for space and terrestrial applications.

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field and 0+ years of relevant experience
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Must be diligent, hardworking, and quick to learn
• 3D CAD experience required
• Ability to obtain and retain a security clearance is required

Desired Skills and Experience

• Has held leadership positions in teams
• Precision mechanical, opto-mechanical, or electronics packaging design experience
• Creo (Pro/E) CAD experience
• Creo (Pro/E) Simulate (FEA) experience
• Hands-on mechanical assembly experience preferred (professional or hobby)
• Machine shop or equivalent experience preferred (professional or hobby)
• Design for military or space requirements preferred

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Involved with the design, fabrication and modification of mechanical and/or electro mechanical components, sub-systems and systems. May include Mechanical Analysis, Aerodynamics/Fluids, Thermal, Fluid Systems, Mechanical Packaging, or others. Evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services. Investigate solutions to product or process problems.
• Support and participate in technical activity
• Design, develop, analyze, document and support testing of products, systems or subsystems
• May use computer-aided engineering or other design/analysis software in the performance of assignments
• Ability to work independently under supervision of others
• Provide regular reporting of progress and status
• Responsible for completion of assigned task on time and meeting technical requirements
• Review customer specifications and requirements, and under direction, develop designs to best support them, including cost as a key design variable
• Specify and evaluate supplier components, subsystems and services
• Support the program design to cost and design for manufacture requirements
• Develop prototypes to retire key development risks as directed
• Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customer as required
• May participate in preparation of less complex proposals
• Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization
• Attend appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings

Working Conditions

Normal for an office environment. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work and local travel.
