POSITION PURPOSE
The new employee in this position will be working in the Toxicology section of the laboratory performing clinical and forensic toxicology testing procedures. The procedures involves manual chemistry techniques. Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental, and cultural needs of the patient. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests, pertinent to the section to which assigned. Records and/or enters into laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting. Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner and according to established policies and procedures. Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations. Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance and calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used in performance of the tests pertinent to the section) to which assigned. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations, in accordance with department policy on procedure. Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing. Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel with regard to results and for clarification of requests and other routine problems which may arise. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships: Approaches conflict in a constructive j manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management. Provides quality patient care by considering the age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent clinical practice. Demonstrates unit/area competencies. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Obtains laboratory specimens from patients while ensuring that consideration is given to the age specific, developmental, and cultural needs of the patient. Takes an active role in departmental and sectional programs or projects to include research, procedure development, task force participation, cost savings initiatives and problem solving. Assists in the training and orientation of new staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Degree in Medical technology is preferred, degrees in biology or chemistry will also be considered. Certification is not required for this position. Recent college graduates are also encouraged to applied.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with physicians, nursing unit personnel while reporting and explaining test results requesting or providing information. Analytical skills necessary to interpret and analyze test results and determine appropriate course of action for abnormal and atypical results. Must relate same to normal health states and to presence of disease and other conditions which may alter test results. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities. Organizational ability necessary to perform various tests on a large volume of samples with appropriate prioritization of work to ensure that results are provided in a timely manner according to the priority status of requests.

This position is in the Toxicology department of Warde Medical Laboratory. It involves instrument operation and preparation of specimens for instrument analysis. We use human body fluids in the analysis of pain medications and drugs of abuse. Therapeutic drug monitoring is also part of our testing menu. Experience in wet chemistry is preferred/desirable. Prior experience in this field is not required. Will train. A B.S. degree in medical technology, chemistry or biological science is required. Certification is not required for this position. Candidates with/without experience and recent graduates are encouraged to apply
