Merced College is a midsized community college located in California’s Central Valley. Founded in 1962, the college serves more than 16,000 students with room to expand on its 267-acre main campus and 120 acre Los Banos site. As a member of the Information Technology Services Department, the Network Specialist supports the district's network infrastructure and ensures services are secure, highly available, and meet our students, staff, and community's needs. General Description:
This is an exempt position. The Network Specialist installs, secures, repairs and maintains district-wide LAN, WLAN and WAN assets, electronic equipment, file/database and web servers; ensures data and network security; manages user access and maintaining related records; and provides technical core-infrastructure support to district and site staff.
Essential Functions:
- Administers systems and servers related to district LAN and WAN (e.g. IP assignments, spam firewall, intrusion detection, physical and virtual servers, etc.)
- Assists with the operation of the network center (e.g., monitoring temperature, organizing materials, ensuring availability of materials, installing hardware, etc.)
- Installs network (client and server) software on a variety of platforms (e.g., service packs, application software, operating software, hardware upgrades, imaging, etc.)
- Maintains network operations and software applications (e.g., IP-based phone system, public address systems, television distribution, alarms, security cameras, wireless network operations, etc.)
- Monitors servers, website, related hardware and supporting software (e.g., throughput, switches, patch panels, racks, etc.)
- Documents and updates work progress and problem resolution in technical support/project databases; follows complex written instructions; creation of technical documentation and procedures for team use
- Tracking of hardware/software/service assets in an approved management system (e.g., routers, switches, access points, security devices, software, etc.)
- Provides technical support and assistance to end users (e.g., retrieving files and emails, accessing district network resources, help desk assistance rotation, coordinating with other IT staff, outside vendors, etc.) in a professional manner and maintains goodwill, cooperation and productive relationships
- Attend and participate in district-wide, departmental meetings and committees to discuss technology related issues and gather/convey information for the purpose of ensuring required functions/task/projects are completed with minimal disruption and to a high standard
- Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g., procedures, system level documentation, work reports, repair status, etc.)
- Recommends technology acquisitions
- Provide quotations for a variety of equipment (e.g., servers, routers, switches, access points, wiring, security hardware/software, wiring, etc.)
- Repairs a variety of items, systems, and components (e.g., end-user devices, wired and wireless equipment, servers and storage systems, etc.)
- Researches topics related to current and emerging technology (e.g. relevant policies, current practices, staffing requirements, financial resources, etc.)
- Supports other staff within the department as needed (e.g. Network Administrator, Business Applications Analyst, etc.)
- Troubleshoots malfunctions of network hardware and/or software applications within local and wide area networks, telephones and security systems (e.g. servers, switches, routers, network protocols, etc.)
- Performs related duties as assigned

Required:
- Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of applicable experience OR
- Associate's degree AND five (5) years of applicable experience OR
- The equivalent education and experience
Desired:
- Cisco CCNA certificate
- Experience with Windows Server and Exchange
- Experience with VMware Technology
