Job description
Position Summary:
Al Bustan Seeds of Culture, the Philadelphia-based organization known for its Arab arts programming, is seeking an editor to help grow its presence with a news vertical that captures the dynamics that shape the lives of SWANA communities in the city and beyond. The goal is coverage of and for those communities, with deep attention to the realities of contemporary U.S. society and politics that affect them. From the position of “permanent others” in the racialized politics of law and order at home, to the connections between U.S. national security priorities and strategic alliances with domestic struggles over who really counts as “one of us”, Al Bustan wants to capture this moment in a turbulent society and political culture, and what it means for those on the wrong end of power. In the sphere of art, this could mean platforming works in progress that members of the community are producing. Beyond narrow definitions of culture, it might mean reflecting the particular experience of migrant labor from SWANA immigrant communities in the permanent gig labor economy.
It’s a broad remit for someone who’s a strong writer and editor at the very minimum but has some fluency and facility with other media. They would best have some background and arts connections in SWANA communities in Philadelphia and its NJ/NYC environs; and some familiarity with a language that’s relevant to the communities who are Al-Bustan’s interlocutors and audience. The right person is someone who finds reward in bringing out the potential of a story, whether that’s text, sound, or image: saving authors steps and helping them out of impasses. They may also have experience as a creator in film, music, or making art across media – they’ll have some skill across various platforms, even if they shine in one in particular. The editor would be soliciting contributions, editing them, and providing an overall editorial vision in consultation with Al Bustan’s team. There’s a preference for someone in Philadelphia, but that’s negotiable for the right person, who would able to take part in person for some events and organizational matters.
This is a part-time commitment at present, working out to about 1-1.5 days a week, managed so as to keep the editorial calendar in motion and manage the commissioning and editorial processes. The editor will know their workflow best, but it probably makes sense to count on at least some engagement with those processes daily Monday-Friday.
Does this sound like you, or someone you know professionally? If so, please send a resume along with a brief note laying out your set of skills and what you’d bring to Al Bustan’s evolving vision for news coverage.
Please do provide samples of published work in any medium that’s relevant that shows your range as an editor, and why you’re the person to make Al Bustan’s vision of community coverage a reality.
