Newsletter Writer/Editor: Sports
USA TODAY/usatoday.com seeks an engaging journalist who can bring voice and personality to USA TODAY Sports newsletters. We need a self-starter who can both work independently and pivot to co-create with colleagues.
This person has excellent news judgment, a love of writing and storytelling, an obsession with engaging readers and a knack for serving the best of USA TODAY Sports to a diverse audience. Experience creating sports content that is timely, topical and relevant is a must.
You will write and curate daily, must-read emails for a broad audience. You will also innovate and strategize about growing audience and converting casual readers to subscribers.
You will be a part of our sports team dedicated to growing our premium subscription service.
You will work closely with our Audience team, which focuses on meeting readers where they are, no matter the platform, and with reporters, producers and editors in sports.
This is a remote position. The working days for this position are likely Sunday-Thursday and may include early mornings and/or non-traditional hours.
Minimum salary for this position: $65,000.00
Responsibilities:
- Work on flagship daily and weekly newsletters for USA TODAY Sports, including writing, editing and curating newsletters.
- Immerse yourself in metrics and strategize with other team members to come up with best practices for current and developing newsletters.
- Be a subject-matter expert and represent newsletters with product, marketing and business teams across USA TODAY and the USA TODAY Network.
- Collaborate with other newsletter writers at USA TODAY and in the USA TODAY Network on best practices.
- Grow audience through newsletters and convert anonymous and registered readers into paying subscribers, while also providing value and engagement for subscribers.
- Be nimble and experiment with formats and styles, measuring success and implementing new strategies.
- Create a unique and habit-forming experience for readers.
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior experience with reporting, writing and newsletters is required.
- Excellent news judgment, clean writing and impressive editing skills.
- Proven ability to consistently create high quality work and meet deadlines.
- Experience writing or curating engaging content.
- Direct experience working on newsletters.
- Regular critical consumption of newsletters from a variety of outlets.
- Ability to use analytics tools and data reports to influence editorial strategy.
- Ability to innovate and bring new ideas to our newsletter strategy.
- A positive attitude and desire to work with a high-energy, diverse team.
- A passion for engaging readers via newsletters.
