Job Overview

The Division of Hematology and Oncology is recruiting a Nurse Practitioner to work with bleeding disorders. This positions functions as an independent healthcare provider who, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients with hemophilia and other related bleeding disorders. He/she demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in providing primary, secondary, and/or tertiary healthcare in the outpatient, inpatient or community setting. The Bleeding Disorders Nurse Practitioner educates patients and their families in order to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health and intervene in acute or chronic illness. The Bleeding Disorders Nurse Practitioner develops criteria for and participates in the evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of care.


The Bleeding Disorders Nurse Practitioner will provide care autonomously to a shared case load of patients, functioning interdependently with physicians in accordance with the Nurse Practitioner-Physician Written Practice Agreement required and approved by the Department of Nursing and Medical Board. The Bleeding Disorders Nurse Practitioner is granted privileges by the Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific delegated medical activities and are reviewed annually for renewal.


This position works with administrative, nursing, pharmacy, physician, and university faculty to assure quality patient care and to promote education and research. Active support and participation in research are expected. The Bleeding Disorders Nurse Practitioner plans and participates in learning opportunities for involved community members.


The position will have a primary reporting relationship to the Director in the clinical setting for organization and management of the clinical practice and a significant interdependent working relationship with the Nurse Clinician, in addition to the physicians with whom he/she practices.

Essential Functions

Clinical Practice and Leadership

  • Conduct comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessment of patients/families with bleeding disorders.
  • In accordance with the Nurse Practitioner-Physician written practice agreement, establish medical diagnoses; order and evaluate diagnostic studies; perform and monitor therapeutic procedures; assess and/or manage follow-up plans.
  • Assess psychosocial, cognitive, developmental and functional assets and limitations of patient/family and plan care to incorporate these needs.
  • Prescribe and regulate factor products/preventive therapy as indicated.
  • Record and document health appraisal data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services, including perioperative planning/coordination.
  • Provide for continuity of care between clinic visits.
  • Analyze clinical practice and identify opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Meet regularly with appropriate physicians; work collaboratively to effect programmatic changes and develop protocols.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive patient education programs that assure quality and appropriateness of care across settings.
  • Participate in quality assessment and improvement activities. Identify important aspects of care and assure findings are used to improve practice and operations.


Education/Outreach

  • Act as resource to healthcare staff and implement educational programs to improve care provided to patients/families.
  • Support the UCMC’s outreach mission through consultation and/or participation in health promotion, health education and specialty requests from community agencies, specifically through attendance of the TriState Bleeding Disorders Foundation and the Ohio Bleeding Disorders Council (OBDC) meetings.

Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing and graduation from an ANA approved Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current/valid RN and APN license to practice in the State of Ohio.
  • 2 years of relevant clinical experience.

Required Trainings/Certifications

  • Current/valid RN and APN license/license eligible to practice in the state of Ohio.
  • May require certification in corresponding specialty.

Required Experience

  • Three (3) years nursing experience.
  • Additional related work experience may be required depending on specialty/sub-specialty.
