General Description
The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) at Niagara County Community College is looking for dependable individuals interested in tutoring our diverse population of students. To be successful in this role candidates should have strong communication skills, a desire to help others, are responsible and have the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Tutors will provide small group and individual tutorial assistance for existing course curriculum. The Professional Tutor bridges the gap between the college and the needs of the student. This position also helps students make academic progress, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in specific content areas; and provide online tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.
Professional Tutors for Psychology are expected to assist students in most or all of the following content areas:
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Lifespan Development
  • Child Development

In-Person and online tutoring hours can occur Monday – Thursday from 8:00am – 4:00pm during the summer sessions. During the standard academic year, tutoring hours can occur Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 7:00pm and Saturday 10:00am – 2:00pm. Please provide your availability within your cover letter as well as the available modality (in-person, online, both) for tutoring services.

In order to build and maintain an active pool of qualified candidates to meet our present and future needs for this position, Niagara County Community College will accept applications on a continuous basis. Openings may or may not exist at this time. Applications are evaluated on an as-needed basis, and candidates will be contacted when the department has an opening. Typical Work Activities
  • Assisting students with course content and problem-solving
  • Providing individual and group tutoring
  • Facilitating study groups and review sessions
  • Creating academic resources/guides for student use
  • Maintaining records of tutoring appointments
  • Utilizing tutoring management system to create, log, and detail appointments
  • Hosting workshops
  • Referring students to appropriate resources
  • Supporting learning and study skills development
  • Assisting students with general computer troubleshooting necessary for coursework
  • Providing embedded tutoring services, as assigned

Essential Functions
Tutoring includes, but is not limited to, reviewing class materials, writing assistance, discussing text, or working on solutions to problems within the designated content area. Tutoring is designed as a supplement to regular classroom instruction so Tutors must be knowledgeable about the content of specific subjects to assist students in increasing their academic skills and understanding.
The most important overall responsibility of all ACE employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students, members of the college community and the public. Tutors must have the ability to navigate relationships with a diverse population.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or higher in a related content area or curriculum.
  • Able to communicate clearly & effectively
  • Strong active listening skills
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • In-depth understanding of the content area(s) the applicant wishes to tutor

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working with students in secondary/higher education.
  • Experience utilizing online conferencing software (ex. ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, etc.).
