Patient Care Technician
Job description
1. Orders special care equipment for the patient utilizing unit protocol and hospital computer information systems. Analyzes documents to ensure department specific requirements have been met prior to entering equipment orders or sending appropriate documents to HIM for scanning. Continually updates electronic medical information vital for patient care. When applicable ensures unit specific patient charges are entered into the appropriate information system.
2. Triages physician and inter-department questions and resolves or refers to appropriate staff as needed. Performs customer service support utilizing the AIDET approach, answering telephones and may escort patients to treatment areas.
3. Provides patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Assists patients with ADLs, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc.
4. Obtains patient temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, saturation of peripheral oxygen reading, intake and output checks, BG checks (POC), and reports abnormalities to the appropriate individual. Performs procedures as directed by the RN such as thermal applications, perineal care, removal of IVs and Foley catheters, emptying of foley bags, application of restraints, backrubs, etc. Collects specimens such as urine, feces, sputum, and delivers as necessary.
5. Documents basic patient care, supply and equipment orders (i.e. specimen collections, basic labs, diet orders, EKG’s) as directed per unit protocol, into the electronic medical record
6. Transports medications, which are not controlled substances. May be authorized to access secured medication storage locations to perform job related functions.
7. Assists nursing and clerical staff with admitting, discharging, transferring, ambulating and transporting patients as directed. Obtains confirmation of diagnostic or medical appointments.
8. May perform duties of an Observation Assistant as needed.
9. Provides administrative support including photocopying, electronic transmission of medical information to physicians, contacting physicians’ offices, pharmacy, and coordination with other departments to facilitate patient care and record keeping. Monitors printers, facsimile machines, and tube stations and distributes information to team members as appropriate.
10. Provides for care of equipment and supplies on unit as assigned. Maintains updated knowledge of and demonstrates correct usage of SPH equipment.
11. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships. Acts with integrity, consistency and respect for differing views. Identifies factors that interfere with effective team functioning and contributes in a resolution. Treats each individual with compassion, respect and integrity.
12. Assists in supporting unit patient flow activities such as patient discharge arrangements including, transport services, record retrieval, etc. as directed by the Clinical Manager/Coordinator. Obtains confirmation of diagnostic or medical appointments. Participates in customer service initiatives. May conduct customer service follow-up calls to discharged patients.
13. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
1. High school diploma required or 5 years’ experience as a CAN/PCT with 3 years’ minimum experience in an acute care setting.
2. Completion of an Accredited Certified Nursing Assistance course , EMT or paramedics training course, or current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of at least one major clinical medical or surgical rotation required.
3. Data entry or order entry experience on a computer preferred.
4. Current CPR certification from America Heart Association required.
5. Knowledge of and/or experience in the correct use of body mechanics.
6. Mental Health Network Department Only: Current CPI certification. (10/06)
7. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare staff.
8. The organization skills necessary to prioritize and accomplish multiple work assignments in a proficient manner under minimal supervision.
9. The ability to proficiently navigate computer software systems with accurate keyboard skills for the entry and retrieval of patient data.
10. The verbal and written English skills necessary to clearly and effectively communicate information.
