Job Summary
The Athletic Trainer ensures that incarcerated individuals admitted to the Challenge Incarceration Program (CIP) meet identified physical fitness standards; that Physical Training (PT) improves each individual’s overall physical condition; and that objective feedback regarding individual progress and participation in PT is provided to the Program Review Team. Responsibilities include:
- Provide musculoskeletal evaluation and fitness screening to all CIP applicants to the programs at MCF-Shakopee to determine each candidate’s ability to safely perform the required Physical Training (PT) and work crew elements of the programs.
- Provide training in injury prevention and healthy lifestyle management. Monitor CIP participant progress and goal attainment. When indicated develop, implement, and maintain individual program accommodations for individuals who would not otherwise be able to participate in the CIP program.
- Evaluate and treat injuries under and in conjunction with a physician.
This position has direct contact with incarcerated individuals.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Current licensure in Minnesota as an Athletic Trainer.
- Oral and written communication skills sufficient to provide training and document results.
- Human relations and interpersonal skills sufficient to influence and motivate individuals and work collaboratively with facility staff.
- Data entry skills sufficient to enter information into necessary databases.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Current National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) certification.
- One or more years of experience as an independent Athletic Trainer in a clinic, high school, or collegiate setting.
Physical Requirements
The selected finalist is required to review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA) for this position and may be required to complete a tuberculosis screening. For a copy of the PDA, please email Katie Wynn (Katie.Wynn@state.mn.us).
Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy.
Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
