Primary Function: The pharmacy technician works with KHC pharmacists to assist in the preparation and dispensing of prescription medication. This includes, but is not limited to, receiving handwritten prescriptions in person, working with other health professionals of KHC, processing prescriptions through a given health insurance, counting medications, giving instructions for administration, troubleshooting rejected claims, and point-of-sale customer service.

Essential Functions:

A. Assist the Pharmacist(s) in the processing, preparation and dispensing of prescriptions and medication orders and medical supplies.

1. Receive prescriptions from patients and verify correct spelling of name, birth date, address, zip code, telephone number and insurance information.

2. Enter patient, demographic, allergies, drug insurance and prescription data into the pharmacy computer system.

3. Assist patient/customer in providing required information to process prescriptions.

4. Under the immediate supervision of a registered Pharmacist, assist in generating prescription labels, drug packaging, stocking, delivery, record keeping, pricing, documentation of third party claims and reimbursements, and preparing, labeling, compounding, storing and providing medications.

5. Count or measure out medications and/or medical supplies for dispensing by a Pharmacist.

6. Has working knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program and legal requirements.

7. Review all controlled substance prescriptions for legally mandated information and electronically transmit to the Hawaii Narcotic Enforcement Division on a routine basis.

8. File prescriptions and maintain prescription records and files on a timely basis and in an orderly manner to comply with record keeping laws and in preparation of audits.

9. Respond professionally to inquiries from patients, customers and medical staff regarding procedural aspects of the drug distribution process, pharmacy prices and third-party insurance issues. Direct inquiries to appropriate pharmacy personnel for response of action.

10. Assist in pricing prescriptions, medical supplies and medication orders based upon pharmacy pricing schedules.

11. Process and package or mail-out prescriptions and prepare clinic medication and medical supplies.

12. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of pharmaceutical medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in the prescribing, dispensing and medical record keeping.

13. Able to perform simple arithmetic calculations required for the usual dosage determination and medication preparations.

14. Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the pharmacy technician’s duties and responsibilities, including standards of ethics and applicable laws, rules and regulations which govern the practice of pharmacy.

15. Has a working knowledge of drug dosages, routes of administration and dosage forms and therapeutics.

16. Has a working knowledge of the procedures and operations relating to the manufacturing, packaging and labeling of drug products.

17. Has appropriate working knowledge of procedures and operations relating to aseptic compounding and parental admixtures.

B. Assist the Pharmacist(s) in the inventory process of maintaining medications, medical supplies and retail merchandise at ideal inventory levels.

1. Has working knowledge of inventory control, basic purchasing principles and drug formulary compliance of 340B drugs.

2. Has working knowledge of the written policies and procedures for the receipt, security, storage, inventory and distribution of prescription drugs, including policies and procedures for identifying, recording and reporting losses or thefts and for correcting all errors and inaccuracies in inventories.

3. Has working knowledge of internet-based wholesale ordering system.

4. Receive, unpack, check in and tag medications and medical supplies from wholesalers and drug manufacturers. Direct all invoices and packing slips to accounting. Able to return items for credit.

5. Monitor inventory levels and reorder non-prescription medications, retail merchandise, vials, bottles and other essential supplies, special orders and medical supplies.

6. Stock shelves with incoming inventory, return to stock prescriptions and medical supplies not picked up by patients and replenish floor stock at ideal levels.

7. Assist in scheduled physical inventories of the pharmacy.

8. Maintain a clean storage area for prescription drugs including counters, shelves and patient areas.

9. Prepares interdepartmental supply orders and charges.

10. Pick up and deliver medical supplies, medication and other pharmacy inventory items when required.

  • Perform sale transactions and provide patients with appropriate drug information, health insurance and other health care related services.

1. Operate cash register either independently or part of Point of Sale program, and handle cash, charge accounts and credit card transactions, including making change and banking.

2. Balance all sales transactions with cash register and prepare daily sales reports for accounting department.

3. Review prescription directions and general questions from patients and medical staff about prescriptions.

4. Assist in the preparation of cash deposits and credit card summaries.

5. Greet customers and answer questions regarding health insurance, over the counter medications, drug prices and other health care related subjects.

6. Answer telephone calls and direct calls to appropriate pharmacy personnel.

  • Assist in the processing of third-party insurance claims and other pharmacy billing and cash management functions.

1. Maintain supplies/forms for third party billings.

2. Complete appropriate third-party reimbursement forms in accordance with third party participating agreements.

3. Assist in third party reconciliation process and audits.

4. Has working knowledge of billings, reconciliation procedures, credit and rebilling procedures and posting of payments for all participating third parties.

5. Assist in the preparation of daily, monthly and annual sales reports for accounting department.

6. Assist with prior authorizations.

  • Perform other tasks and special projects which allow the pharmacy to achieve the annual performance goals.

1. Participate in the orientation of new pharmacy technicians, volunteers and pharmacy interns as assigned.

2. Observe all safety and health regulations and work in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the Health Center.

3. Report unsafe acts/conditions and injuries to Supervisor immediately.

4. Attend training classes and educational presentations including HIPAA and Medicare Fraud and Abuse classes.

5. Assist in training other pharmacy personnel to perform specific assignments while on leave and performs the job assignments of other pharmacy technicians when they are on leave.

6. Follow pharmacy and Center policies and procedures, including guidelines covering attendance and dress.

7. Perform duties in a courteous, professional and friendly manner that fosters excellent customer service and departmental teamwork.

8. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours:

This is a Temporary-Half-Time position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Hours and days may vary depending on department needs.

Required Education/Experience:

1. High school graduate/GED

2. Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred but completion of pharmacy technician program or on-the-job pharmacy training work experience considered

3. Two years’ work experience as a pharmacy technician/clerk preferred
