Job description
The purpose of this position is to perform supervisory tasks related to mail handling in the Lamar University Mail Centre and provide information to customers regarding classification, , rates, methods of mailing, fees and special services, and related phases of postal laws and regulations. This is accomplished by separating mail in postal facility including incoming and outgoing mail, providing relief with the parcel distribution window, ensuring proper distribution of campus mail, and efficient dispatch of United States mail, maintaining postal products in inventory, selling postage stamps, issuing and cashing domestic money orders, and renting post office boxes. Other duties include opening and closing the Mail Centre, and furnishing frequently requested information.
What You’ll Do – Position Duties
- Operates university mailroom by selling postage stamps; inspecting materials to ensure mail qualifies for applicable postage rates; weighing mail; ensuring mail is processed in electronic domestic and international mail database; handling cash; registering, certifying, insuring and handling Express mail; opening and closing Mail Centre; meeting with faculty, staff, and students; answering questions; maintaining current and accurate Box Rental System records; accepting claims for insured and COD parcels; and preparing monthly reports and summaries.
- Performs metering of mail and folding/inserting by computing postage rates; monitoring and directing work flow and stroke counts; training new employees; sorting items; exiting from mail processing machinery in efficient manner; setting and operating post office meter, scales, sealers, adding machine, postal money order meter and other distribution center equipment; and folding and inserting information in envelops for departmental billing.
- Sorts and distributes incoming mail and receives and distributes outgoing mail by receiving and distributing mail; maintaining faculty and staff mailboxes; checking mailing and delivery records; disposing of damaged articles; meeting with staff members; inserting mail into machine; running machine to apply postage; and maintaining accurate records.
- Performs related duties by providing encoding, pre-sorting and standard mail services; furnishing frequently requested information such as use of meters, pre-canceled stamps, permit imprints, fees, special stamps, parcel post limitations, refunds, and packing and presorting requirements; maintaining student box rental information and mail forwarding; analyzing and charting department charges for University accounts; and training new employees.

- Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Community college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
- Over three years up to and including five years.
Certifications Required:
- Certified Mail Manager; Certified Mail and Distribution System Management

Physical Requirements:
- Medium Work – Will be required to lift and or move: 20 – 50 lbs, occasionally 10 – 25 lbs, frequently up to 10 lbs constantly
Job Conditions:
- Typical schedule is M-F 8am-5pm, with some occasional after-hours work. This position supports essential functions of Campus Operations and may occasionally work outside of normal business hours.
