Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to join an exciting NASA-funded project focused on wildfire impacts on carbon transport to coastal waters. The postdoctoral scholar will (a) develop and implement integrated watershed modeling approaches aimed at quantifying the effect of wildfire events on watershed runoff and export of sediment and soil organic carbon, and (b) collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to investigate the effects of wildfires and watershed sediment and carbon transport on California coastal ecosystems and primary producers. A successful candidate should have experience in the scientific application of large-scale watershed models (e.g., SWAT, PARFLOW, GSFLOW, etc.) and will have at least 1 first author peer review research paper. Additional experience in reactive transport modeling is desirable, specifically suspended sediments and DOC, but not a prerequisite of the position.

The postdoctoral scholar is expected to write research articles aimed at disseminating the results obtained from the research, play an important role in supervising and mentoring undergraduate students, and take an engaged role in project management (e.g., budget and timeline, quality assurance, EH&S). The postdoctoral scholar will also undertake professional development activities in consultation with the PIs to further the training and career advancement of the postdoc. The position will be in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UC Merced and will work on the supervision of Drs. Thomas Harmon and Erin Hestir.

As a condition of employment, you will be required to comply with the University of California SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program Policy: []. All Covered Individuals under the policy must provide proof of Full Vaccination or, if applicable, submit a request for Exception (based on Medical Exemption, Disability, and/or Religious Objection) or Deferral (based on pregnancy) no later than the applicable deadline. New University of California employees should refer to Appendix F, Section II.C. of the policy for applicable deadlines. (Capitalized terms in this paragraph are defined in the policy.) Federal, state, or local public health directives may impose additional requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications

A Ph.D. (at the time of appointment) in the physical sciences (e.g., physics, hydrology, geology, environmental science) or engineering (e.g., civil, environmental, mechanical, geological) with a focus on watershed hydrology. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Preferred qualifications

The candidate should have experience in running and troubleshooting complex environmental simulation codes (e.g., C++, Fortran), and in scripting using such tools as R, MatLab, and Python in the context of pre- and post-processing of model output. The candidate should also be familiar with Remote Sensing and GIS, including some experience with ESRI or other spatial/GIS software.
Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct scientific research independently and successfully.
