The following position is to join our Corporate or Research Center Team:

Principal Health and Safety Specialist

The Environment, Health and Safety Team at Raytheon Technologies Research Center is looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual for the position of Principal Health & Safety (H&S) Specialist. In this role, the successful candidate will define requirements, audit program elements, write standard work, implement regulatory compliance activities, provide training and oversee site wide compliance. This position reports directly to the Environment, Health & Safety Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partnering with the leadership team and line supervision to ensure H&S regulatory compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations and adherence to RTRC procedures and company H&S Standard Practices as well as identification of H&S hazards and controls to mitigate risks.
  • Acting as the Site program manager for H&S programs such as machine guarding, electrical safety, contractor safety, control of hazardous energy (LO/TO), industrial hygiene, training, incident investigation, personal protective equipment selection, hazard communication compliance, ionizing radiation, medical program management, process hazard analyses, etc.
  • Facilitating incident reviews and responding to incidents including being on call.
  • Assisting with OSHA recordkeeping and reporting as needed.
  • Providing timely information and guidance to the EHS councils and sub-committees, including H&S performance trends and root cause corrective actions for incidents and near misses.
  • Supporting in the development and implementation of strategic action plans to achieve the company goal of having a hazard-free workplace, injury-free employees and an unmatched commitment to compliance and pollution prevention.
  • Providing leadership for EHS program implementation, compliance and continuous improvement of our EH&S program and safety culture.
  • Maintain a safe work environment that adheres to our company policies & procedures.
  • Other related duties as required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of H&S management systems and demonstrated experience in environmental, health and safety compliance.
  • U.S. Citizen or Green Card/Permanent Resident required.
  • Typically requires a degree in one of the following programs: Environmental, Health and Safety, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Management, Industrial Engineering, Safety or Occupational Health Sciences or related technical field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Environmental Health & Safety subject areas, such as:
    • Developing and maintaining EH&S policies and program documents.
    • Collecting and presenting metrics.
    • Facilitating or supporting audits and/or inspections.
    • Knowledge of risk assessments.
    • Conducting ergonomic assessments and training.
    • Identifying and mitigating workplace hazards.
    • Injury investigation experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with people across all organizational levels.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks/projects and support assignments as required, through organization and excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to plan and follow-up on workflow to meet department goals and objectives.
  • Strong analytical and organizational thinking ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and adaptability.
  • Ability to identify and delegate work to on-site consultant support.
  • Must be comfortable working independently on projects, participates on multiple team efforts, & be energetic and provide team leadership & mentoring.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Additional certifications, such as CSP, CIH. P.E. or CHMM, strongly preferred.

  • East Hartford, CT (This is an on- site position.)
  • Relocation is being offered for this role.

Education:

  • University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years’ prior relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years’ experience.

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
