Supervisor, Production


This position reports directly to the General Supervisor, SPA/Fertilizer/Shipping.


This position is located in Aurora, North Carolina, U.S.A. and is not available for remote work.


What you will do:


The Supervisor is responsible for leading the safe execution of the duties of the Liquids department at Nutrien in Aurora with a focus on daily production needs. This individual plans, directs, coordinates and executes daily activities based on the published schedule or directive. The supervisor will monitor the progress of activities, deal with any identified obstacles that limit the productivity of the area, conduct site visits to ensure that all assigned work is performed in a safe manner and provide direct supervision of their assigned crew. The supervisor will work directly with the employees and ensure that the company’s business objectives and safety, health & environmental policies are met.

  • Ability to operate all plant equipment to ensure optimum production
  • Conducts crew meetings, assists safety team with inspections and getting problems solved
  • Ensures that employee(s) has proper safety equipment and they use it properly
  • Follow-up on safety problems to help reduce first aid cases and recordable cases
  • Communicates with employees about company goals, policies, and procedures
  • Monitors and evaluates all environmental controls and records to ensure there are no letters of non-compliance
  • Constantly updating employees of changes in the SOPs on environmental issues-all environmental incidents receive action and follow-up
  • Encourages and plans for each employee to attend all available trainings
  • Oversees cross-training to achieve each employee’s development
  • Evaluates each employee by way of an annual performance appraisal
  • Oversees initial operator training for all new contractors, OIT’s, and employees within the department
  • Oversees sulfur unloading facility to ensure operators are properly trained in sulfur railcar unloading and plans schedule accordingly to ensure production goals are met
  • Assists with Down-Day and Turn-Around planning and execution within the Liquid Shipping Department
  • Communicates Maintenance and I&E priorities with Lead Maintenance Specialist and assists with execution and planning of these activities
  • Acquires quotes, writes requisitions, and pays invoices for contract personnel, operations supplies, and equipment as needed for the department
  • Monitors sulfur unloading system closely to ensure proper and efficient operation
  • Suggests improvements in process or methods and review proposed capital investments utilizing knowledge and experience to ensure improvements
  • Makes procedure updates, develops energy isolation check sheets, and follows through with action item completions in the area
  • Leads area continuous improvement initiatives
  • Represents Nutrien through community participation and in local activities
  • Incumbent is responsible for maximizing production of department at or below budgeted cost
  • Annual goals are set from which performance will be determined
  • Supports activities to ensure compliance with FDA / FSMA regulations and specific product certification programs or programs deemed necessary by Sales (NSF/ANSI Standard 60, FSSC 22000, Kosher, Halal, FSC36, SF/SF, etc.) as it applies to food grade and feed grade phosphate products manufactured at the Aurora site
  • Provides leadership, expertise, and direction for Liquid Shipping production execution activities
  • Ensures work activities are conducted safely and in accordance with schedules and plans by competent personnel in accordance with the relevant laws, regulations, standards, and operating procedures
  • Supervises group of operators and/or contractors in the operation of the Liquids department


What you will bring:


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field with 6+ years' of relevant work experience is preferred
  • Incumbent must meet all the requirements on the supervisory promotion checklist
  • At least 5 years’ experience at this site, a minimum of competent rating on last performance appraisal and better-than-average attendance record
  • Must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the operations of the Liquid Shipping department
  • Knowledge and ability to inspect the entire plant for proper operation and for Safety and Environmental issues is required
  • Incumbent should have a thorough knowledge of the Liquids Loading and Sulfur Unloading systems and their related equipment
  • Detailed knowledge of the rail trackage and traffic flow
  • Knowledge of the OSHA Process Safety Management Regulation CFR 1910.110
  • Incumbent should be proficient in written and oral communication, in planning work, organizing people, delegating responsibilities, and the ability to motivate and train people
  • Competent rating on performance reviews
  • Met or exceeded plant five-year attendance averages
