Given our growing business, Arup is seeking a talented and motivated Rail Design Manager who wants to accelerate their career by joining the Rail Team. You will be focusing on executing current rail project work as well as helping Arup pursue new rail projects. Our teams are currently working on projects like Penn Station Access, Long Island Rail Road Expansion Project, North East Corridor Commission NEC 37, NJ Transit operations task orders, and NYCT Resiliency Work. Our teams also work on regional projects like the MBTA Green Line Extension, Eglington Crosstown West Extension LRT in Toronto, and WMATA Potomac Yard Station.


We are looking for someone to provide management and coordination to the design process by overseeing and directing the design and consulting teams from the Prime Consultant position while interfacing with the client.


You will:

  • Foster creativity and innovation working with a multi-disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high quality technical excellence
  • Use your expertise in Rail to manage the design process of a multi-disciplinary design team where Arup is the Prime or lead designer
  • Participate in local and national rail associations for example NY Metropolitan Railway Club or AREMA
  • Ensure the design compliance with Quality Management systems
  • Ensure that the Design teams achieve co-ordination
  • Understand the Client’s goals and aspirations and maintain them as a reference point throughout the project
  • Facilitate the Client user groups and stakeholder meetings
  • Facilitate and track the resolution of design decisions
  • Support the Project Manager in establishing and monitoring the design scope, schedule and resource plan for the design team
  • Coordinate communication and flow of information between design team members
  • Coordinate activities and deliverables between design team members
  • Assess client needs and identify relevant connections with Arup capabilities
  • Have excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Desirably have experience with construction contract document preparation and management in a Design-build environment

About You:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Experience with direct interfacing with clients as a prime consultant manager is key
  • 15 years of design experience preferably in the rail transit market.
  • 5 or more years of experience in design/project management of complex transit facilities and/or rail systems.
  • PE – New York or New Jersey (or ability to get one within one year)
  • MTA (or other major transit agency), experience is highly preferable
  • Demonstrable understanding of owner/client capital project drivers and priorities
  • Basic understanding of construction project procurement approaches, and ability to understand project schedule and cost estimate documents is preferred
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage design/consulting delivery teams
  • Corporate client-facing communications skills
  • Excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment
  • Must be self-motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges
  • Fluent with standard MS Office applications; experience with MS Project or Primavera a plus

NYC hiring range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in New York City is $135,400 to $190,000 per year. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of NYC will differ.
