Position Summary:
The Reference Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day management of information requests directed to the Library and provides firm-wide support to attorneys and staff as the lead member of a team of research professionals with the goal of meeting the firm’s legal research and business development needs.

The Reference Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day management of information requests directed to the Library and provides firm-wide support to attorneys and staff as the lead member of a team of research professionals with the goal of meeting the firm’s legal research and business development needs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise Library’s reference staff and manages workflow. Uses a request system (Service Now) to manage requests and prepare analytics. Assigns tasks as needed. Provides training and guidance to librarians and library staff. Ensures that service standards and library procedures are maintained by self and staff. Keeps staff informed of pertinent projects as they relate to Firm’s clients.
- Provides general and in-depth, cost-effective legal and non-legal research for attorneys, and non-legal staff. Conducts all facets of legal and business reference.
- Promotes knowledge of the Library’s collection. Provides formal and informal training and instruction on legal and information resources to attorneys and other researchers as needed. Conducts library orientations and trainings for new attorneys and summer associates as needed. Coordinates vendor sponsored trainings.
- Helps to support all library record keeping including but not limited to library statistics, password lists, watch lists, routing lists, disbursements, and time & billing records.
- Works with Library Director in development and implementation of policies, procedures, and best practices for reference services, and assists in the evaluation of reference staff.
- Performs corporate research such as locating precedents, exhibits to filings, and sample clauses.
- Performs company research for new business intake and client development. Provides research on company mergers, divestitures, subsidiaries, and affiliates. Selects and compiles news stories and identifies key events and industry trends.
- Performs legislative history and intent research and monitors regulatory and legislative changes as needed.
- Frequent use of databases including but not limited to:
- Accurint; Bloomberg Law; Capital IQ, Crunchbase; Docket Navigator; Factset; HeinOnline; Hoovers; Intelligize; Kluwer Arbitration; Lex Machina; Lexis+; Mergent, Mlex; PACER; PacerPro; Pro Quest Dialog; RIA Checkpoint; Saegis; VitalLaw; Westlaw, World Check One.
- Familiarity with trademark and patent research using various specialized intellectual property databases.
- Takes the lead in maintaining proficiency with all databases and keeps up with enhancements.
- Utilizes various document delivery services to obtain publications, articles, reports, etc. Performs interlibrary loans as needed. Participates in library listservs for interlibrary loan.
- Familiarity with searching web based social networking tools.
- Maintains Library alert services (ongoing monitoring of cases, companies, events, or topics) and reports back to attorneys on a timely basis.
- Prepares handouts and pathfinders on research topics as requested. Assists in preparing library communications and guides.
- Analyzes and critiques new research products and summarizes in a written format for library staff and attorneys as needed.
- Strong service orientation and ability to lead a team effectively.
- Adept at analyzing and synthesizing information.
- Good interpersonal, written, and presentation skills.
- Strong computer and technology skills. Ability to absorb and apply new technologies to create improved and innovative library services.
- Familiar with project management practices. Ability to work on short- and long-term projects independently, multitask, and work under pressure to meet attorney expectations.
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
- 7+ years of law firm library experience.
- Familiarity with SharePoint, HTML, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other related applications.
