The Registered Nurse is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day clinical support activity at SHS, direct supervision of the Nursing and Medical Assistant staff, as well as provide nursing care to students. Integral member of administrative staff tasked with planning and implementing the Health Services’ goals and objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and perform basic nursing work-ups and assessments, including: vital signs, venipuncture and finger sticks to draw blood, immunizations and other injections, in-office EKGs, preparation of lab specimens, vision and hearing screening, throat cultures, pregnancy tests.
  • Coordinate lab tests: prepare specimens and send to lab; screen lab test results, file in patient charts and route to nurse practitioner, flagging highly unusual results; follow up with patients by informing of test results, coordinating follow up Health Service appointments or consultations.
  • Dispense medications to patients, under the nurse practitioners direction, and coordinate prescriptions with the pharmacy contractor.
  • Assist the nurse practitioner with various procedures and examinations.
  • Perform a variety of patient education functions: reaffirm nurse practitioner instructions, distribute literature, and answer a wide range of patients’ questions.
  • Perform triage to assess nature and severity of medical problems; determine if Nurse Practitioner can accept patient at the next sick call.
  • Assist with set up and general maintenance of exam rooms, lab areas, and nurses’ work station.
  • Provide first aid and other emergency care when Nurse Practitioner is absent.
  • Assist as needed with general office work, patient chart filing.
  • Perform initial Assessment of patients using “Standing Orders”
  • Supervise all Lab and clinical
  • Understand and comply with Material Safety Data Sheet and Hazard Communication procedures and policies as part of UNE’s comprehensive Occupational Safety and Health Administration compliance program
  • Understand and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration Bloodborne Pathogen Standard ( 29 CFR 1910.1030) and Chapter 8 of the University of New England Safety Manual.
  • Perform related duties as necessary.

Qualifications
Must hold a Registered Nurse license to practice in the State of Maine and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a health related field. In addition must have:
General functions
  • Broad base of basic technical knowledge and skills needed to perform all clinical duties of job.
  • Relevant experience in a host health care setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in nursing administration
  • Relevant triage experience.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to function within a fully electronic medical record required
  • Must demonstrate strong oral and written communications skill
  • Physical ability to perform all primary job duties.
Administrative functions
  • SHS Infection Control Coordinator, training all clinical staff on OSHA requirements and infection prevention practices.
  • Designated as person responsible for pharmaceutical services in accordance with AAAHC Standards.
  • Designated as person responsible to monitor and coordinate response to events reported to Medical Director
  • Develop, in collaboration with medical staff, Clinical Protocols and Department Policy & Procedures and maintain them annually to current best practice standards.
  • Screen potential new nursing employees, conduct interviews and work with Medical Director for hiring decisions.
  • Responsible to maintain appropriate clinical support coverage during SHS hours of operation.
  • Supervision and annual performance review of clinical support staff.
  • Oversight and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment in SHS.
  • Coordinate annual Influenza vaccination campaign for all faculty, staff and students,
  • Monitor student immunization compliance and initiate governmental agency reporting as applicable.
  • Serve as clinical liaison to electronic medical record projects during the summer months.
