We have an exciting opportunity for a Registered Veterinarian Technician to join our Medical team. Reporting to the Veterinarian, the Registered Veterinary Technician participates in the daily operation of the Health Center by providing medical care and administrative support. The Veterinary Technician will assist with the animal intake process and medical procedures, administer medications and vaccines, and provide medical information to staff and guests. Below is a description of duties for this position.
Medical Responsibilities
· Intake of dogs and cats following veterinary protocols (administering vaccines, snap tests, exams, etc.).
· Prepare medications (non-controlled), tests, vaccines and equipment to be used each day; including surgical packs
· Clean, sonicate, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments.
· Prepare animals for surgery and general medical procedures under the direction of the Veterinarians.
· Assist Veterinarians with spay/neuter/dental cleanings and other necessary surgeries.
· Assist Veterinarians with general medical care of all animals.
· Perform all post-surgical clean-up, including instruments, laundry, packs, etc.
· Keep storage, exam, prep, and surgery rooms hygienically clean and in order.
· Administer injections, vaccinations, medications (non-controlled), treatments and supportive care measures as directed by the Veterinarians.
· Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative, and postoperative phases.
· Ensure that all Health Center equipment is functional and properly report malfunctions to Veterinarian appropriately.
· Draw blood, urine, fecal samples and determine results, as appropriate.
· Perform other lab tests, as directed.
· Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
Administrative/Other Responsibilities
· Maintain medical records on every animal.
· Maintain medical supplies inventory and ensure that supplies are in-date.
· Order and maintain veterinary supplies.
· Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
· Follow all written and verbally communicated Standard Operating Procedures.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
· Communicate in an effective and professional manner with staff, vendors and guests.
· Responsible for communicating comprehensive medical information regarding individual animals to potential adopters.
· Participate in educational programming (i.e. pop up presentations, behind the scenes clinic tours, etc.).
· Represent Annenberg PetSpace in professional and courteous manner at all times.
Education and Experience:
· 5+ years working as a Veterinary Technician
· Registered Veterinary Technician License
· Experience performing complex animal health procedures
· Experience to calculate and administer medications (non-controlled)
· Experience to accomplish blood and urine collection
· Knowledge of hospital protocols in an animal environment
· Experience initiating appropriate infection control precautions and evaluating hospital sanitation protocols, and performing facility inspection, assessing working conditions, and initiating corrective action.
· Experience documenting and managing inventory.
· Experience recognizing emergency situations and in performing emergency treatments under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian.
· Experience applying knowledge of Biosafety standards, and infection/hazardous waste control principles and practices.
Skills and Abilities:
· Excellent animal handling skills
· Excellent customer service skills
· Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and selected shelter software/database
· Must be able to lift and carry 40-plus pounds repeatedly throughout day with assistance
· Must possess the ability to work standing for 8 hours
· Must possess the ability to work efficiently and calmly under challenging conditions
· Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
· An individual who can contribute to the culture of respect for all individuals and animals
· Strong administrative and organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy
· Effective written and oral communication skills with ability to compose routine correspondence
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $31.00 - $33.00 per hour
