At STScI, we are building innovative calibration software for the processing and analysis of observations from these NASA’s flagship missions in support the astronomical community. We are hiring a Science Software Engineer to join one of the largest open source projects in astronomy working with our Science Calibration Software Team.

Responsibilities include:

In this position, you will be responsible for developing software for processing astronomical data in a fast-paced, multi-mission environment. You will build calibration software capable of precise reductions of astronomical observations and interact with astronomers to deliver innovative solutions to solve cutting-edge astronomical problems.

• Developing software for spectroscopic data reductions
• Contributing to open source Python packages for scientific analysis
• Automating pipeline processing and data quality monitoring

Qualifications:

We prefer a degree in Computer Science, Physics or Astronomy, or a relevant field with a minimum of 2+ years software development experience.

• You are able to identify problems and implement solutions and offer guidance to development teams and end-users.
• Expertise using Python
• Experience with open source libraries like NumPy, SciPy, astropy
• Familiarity using Git in a team setting
• Familiarity with testing tools
• Familiarity with spectroscopy and astronomical observation
• Strong teamwork, analytical, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
• This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements.
