The Scientific Curator will be based in Bar Harbor, Maine and works with research faculty & staff scientists across JAX campuses to import a wide array of biomedical data into JAX BioConnect, and other research related platforms, for the purpose of access, display and analysis.
The incumbent works independently to transform and curate scientific data from a variety of existing internal and external sources into formats appropriate for loading databases and assist in capturing and documenting experimental methods and results. This position plays a critical role in data annotation and curation for The Cube Initiative, through diverse activities to gather, analyze, evaluate, and integrate information and analysis results using biomedical ontologies.
The Scientific Curator promotes the adoption of institutional metadata standards and helps individual laboratories and scientific services with data and metadata submission, allowing for proper tracking of relevant scientific datasets. This role also works with collaborators outside of Jackson Laboratory to support and manage the integration of externally sourced data with in-house data. Additionally, the incumbent communicates with JAX technical teams (Computational Sciences, Research IT) to share understanding of research complexities, challenges, and opportunities to continuously improve how software supports research.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and manage the organization and annotation of samples and biomedical data from internal and external sources. Perform and manage the importation of relevant data sets from external sources.
  • Assess, identify and address data quality or consistency issues to achieve project targets
  • Work with a broad range of researchers and staff to ensure appropriate metadata standards are applied for the annotation of samples and data sets from internal and external sources
  • Through the work above, identify opportunities for process improvement. Perform documentation of procedures, standards and metrics.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree
  • 1-2 years of Life sciences research background and hands-on experience with a broad spectrum of biological data management (for example: genomics, bioinformatics, next-generation sequencing, microscopy, imaging)
  • Project management skills and achievements as demonstrated by leadership and participation in projects and collaborations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects at the same time and complete projects successfully and on time
  • Ability to operate computer hardware and software applications that would normally be encountered in JAX operations, such as the JAXStrain database, Sharepoint, Axapta, Microsoft Excel/Pivot Tables, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, etc.
  • A positive attitude, self-starter and ability to perform successfully in a fast-paced environment. Sense of urgency
  • Able to work independently, creatively and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience working in cross-functional teams, with data science teams and with stakeholders. Able to maintain effective working relationship with scientists at all levels.
