Unit Mission Statement
The mission of Facilities Management is to enable the institute to carry out its mission of teaching, research and advisory service by providing cost effective and efficient planning, design, construction, maintenance, safety, and security services throughout Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Position Summary
Facilities Management at the Virginia institute of Marine of Science (VIMS) located in Gloucester Point, VA invites highly-motivated applicants for the critical role as
Control Systems Technician.
The Control Systems Technician repairs, installs, modifies, and monitors various automated controls systems on campus. Systems include building automation and lab controls in various campus facilities. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Management the Control Systems Technician, makes adjustment to automation programming, device repair or replacement, as well as developing reports and other functions as required.
Specific duties include (but not limited to):
The Control Systems Technician repairs, installs, modifies, and monitors various automated controls systems on campus. Systems include building automation and lab controls in various campus facilities. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Management the Control Systems Technician, makes adjustment to automation programming, device repair or replacement, as well as developing reports and other functions as required.
Specific duties include (but not limited to):
- Implements control changes to include equipment and programming as required to support minor system modifications. Supports operators in process controls by implementing programming and logic adjustments to systems.
- Monitors and troubleshoots computerized building and lab automation monitoring systems which consists of the energy management and HVAC control systems and laboratory support systems.
- Reviews campus systems operation and implements energy management controls strategies to minimize utility consumption.
- Monitors equipment operation and high energy consuming process to look for opportunities to reduce power consumption and build in efficiencies in the use of energy.
Required Qualifications
EDUCATION
:
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s license.
COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, controls schematics, and service manuals.
- Knowledge of Energy Management practices and programs.
- General knowledge of building systems including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems
- Demonstrated skills and abilities to accurately carries out instructions and complete assignments without continuous review or close supervision.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to prepare analysis’s and produce reports. Demonstrated skills to obtain/evaluate necessary information and the ability apply good judgment in resolving problems.
- High degree of computer proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS Office, web-based applications and databases, and building automation software\
- Self-starter, the proven ability to creatively handle difficult or unusual assignments.
- Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment, taking an appropriate level of initiative.
- Ability to perform physical activities essential to the job.
EXPERIENCE:
- Substantive experience related to the position.
- Experience with major digital controls hardware and software
- Experience with commercial / industrial Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system.
Preferred Qualifications
EXPERIENCE:
- Possess a manufacturer training certificate or equivalent experience
- Experience with Johnson Controls hardware and Software.
- Experience with Siemens hardware and Software.
- Experience with Programmable Logic Controller systems.
- Process and water treatment systems experience.
Advertised Pay Range
Up to $65,000, commensurate with experience.

- This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and university policy.
- This position has been designated as essential personnel to the operation of the Department, may be required to report to work when the university is officially closed, is subject to alternate schedules or overtime.
- Valid Driver’s license must be maintained at all times.
- The position will drive company vehicles as required, may be required to travel.
