Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to support the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Located in a remote, highly secure area of southern Nevada, the NNSS is a premier outdoor, indoor, and underground national laboratory. It is a preferred location for experiments supporting the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)’s nuclear weapons Stockpile Stewardship Programs, national defense programs, and national security research, development, and training programs, as well as vital programs of other federal agencies.

The Engineering Department is establishing a small team to be based in Mercury, NV. This team will be responsible for supporting low-rigor projects, emerging project issues, providing support for project discovery, project scope development, support for identifying functional requirements for projects and systems, and providing support to the Construction Department at a minimum. This team may also provide support as needed to the Engineering Department. The team may participate on walk-downs, generate sketches, help develop conceptual designs, evaluate existing systems with system owners, and generate and/or review functional requirements documents. As the Senior Electrical Engineer, you should be able to work on multiple projects, maintain a high level of detail, work well with technical personnel, adapt to project demands, and be capable of completing workload with little oversight.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and check design drawings, specifications, calculations, system design descriptions, and stand detail development for industrial and commercial building electrical systems. Also, prepare and check design drawings, specifications, and calculations for electronic microprocessor-based protection control equipment, short circuit analysis, relay coordination, and protective and control device assessment studies utilizing SKM. Prepare electrical equipment bid specification along with review and approval of proposals and submittals.
  • Coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines, Authority Having Jurisdiction, system engineers, facility managers, project managers, and project engineers. Build teaming relationship with technical and other company organizations.
  • Devise solution to highly complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions may require resolving conflicting customer expectations and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and cross-disciplinary integration. Coordinate complex projects including team members external to MSTS. Focuses on projects of substantial complexity and broad scope, requiring interdisciplinary coordination. Interpret and adapt guidelines for specific cases.
  • Prepare work statements for complex subcontracts and procurements, evaluates bids and makes recommendation for awards. Define customer needs and develops scope of work. Ensure design deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • Must address all aspects of safety in design and execution of work. Work may affect public health and safety. Likely to act as a safety team lead. May help formulate ESH&Q protocols.
Qualifications:
Due to the nature of our work, US Citizenship is required for all positions.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees
  • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Or Professional Engineer license
  • Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
Addtional requirements:
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards within the discipline
  • Working knowledge of National Electric Code, National Electric Safety Code, state and local codes and standards, Codes of Federal Regulation.
  • Experience with one-line diagrams, relay metering, and control schematics.
  • Knowledge of SKM or similar software.
  • Experience in design of lightning protection systems.
  • Experience in design of electrical power plans, lighting plans, single line, schematic, grounding plans, etc. for industrial and commercial applications.
  • Experience in as-builting, analysis, and discovery of older facilities that require modifications.
  • PE license desired but not required.
  • Membership in discipline organization (ACI, AISC, ASME, etc.) preferred, but not required.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
Other Details:
  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site in North Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).

Drug Screening Information: MSTS is required by Department of Energy (DOE) directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Level Security Clearance: Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required.
